I had an odd wear mark on the top bearing and spacer that I discussed here before. Put in a new bearing and flipped the spacer before the last trip and the drive got sizzling hot and I milked the gear oil.:eek:
I checked the bearing and it measured exactly the same as the old one.
I did change the case gasket and it measured exactly the same.
Any ideas on cause here?:confused::mad:

J.J. set me stright on the set-up, I use a .008 & .010 wire, and I use them to determine my gear back lash, it's just easier to slip a wire between the gears vs. feeler guage w/box in the boat, man it hurts the crap outta my back getten down there;)
U've had a hot running Box if I remember, R the inner spacers in the correct spot, top shaft, bottom shaft.
JJ can tell U what they should measure

I didn't check the lash since everything I was putting back was the same size.
That's the first thing I'll check this weekend.
Hey Louis, if flipping the top spacer and putting in a bearing changed the lash how much do I take off of the spacer to correct it? Or do I need a longer spacer???

I don't see why the lash would change. The only way the lash would change is if you moved the position of both bearings and spacers together, unless there was slack between the spacers and the gear to start. If that is the case you will probably have to start from scratch on the top shaft. You don,t want to machine the spacer. You need to change the shims on the top shaft to adjust the back lash.
Just to throw something out there do think maybe the box got hot from the water in the oil this time and not the setup.

Whoa there let's not get all confused here, anytime parts are changed it needs to be checked and stacked, also the lash is set on the bottom shaft since it is on an angle, the top gear is stationary, to add lash you move the gear towards the rear and vice versa, .005 is .001 lash added or removed, and remember what ever you do to one spacer, the opposite has to be done to the other one!.... Also be careful on the bottom inner spacer, it don't have full splines make sure the splines are towards the gear!... Capiche!..:D

I didn't touch the inner spacers. I just changed the top bearing because of the strange groove from the spacer in it. I measured the bearing and it was EXACTLY the same size as the old bearing. I'll be checking all the measurements this Sunday to see if I can figure out what I screwed up.
What time are you stopping by to double check my work?:D

I don't think the heat was from milking the box but it could be. I'll be checking everything this weekend to see what I did.
