I am gong to make a layup to run vertically between the bottom of the boat and the deck..on the sides..outside of the stringers. This will be so when people lean on the side....the side doesn't flex. This will take place of the bent angle bracket most drag guys put in place. Am I making sense?
Question is..does anyone have a core material recommendation? I will glass it on both sides, so the core is just for...well, filler..what a core is for. I have heard of something called deck a lite, or deck lite, or something like that.
I am also l ooking for a carbon fiber source. I just need a couple of yards. (cosmetic mostly...I am going to build my windshield out of CF instead of cheesy lexan)

Paul...done with typos...in a hurry I guess.
Fiberlay only had graphite cloth and kevlar, no CF that I could find.

BTW, any thoughts on my vertical strengthener panel? The promod and up guys usualy just use a sheet of plywood in there sideways...ugly and heavy.

Divinycell foam and end grain balsa are two core materials. They are both light and designed to be used with resins.
One thing about core materials you don't want to screw or bolt through the piece where the core is. Water can then get inside and cause problems and additionally through bolts can crush the part.

How about a vertical nomex honeycomb panel instead of plywood? Very light and strong

Kevin,
Do you have to go to Boeing to get it?

Well, I got some out of Washington, but I don't think it came from Boeing. I have also used Nida-Core, but I think I would use foam, Balsa, or a thin plywood to do the job you are talking about.

Boeing used to have a "garage sale" once a month or so, alot of the hydro guys used to get that kinda of stuff there. I guess it was a pretty big deal.

I have often wondered about how this stuff would work in a new Flatbottom racer. we use it in the tournament boat world and it is a great material. Down side is that it won't hold a screw well and every thing needs to be thru bolted.
Need not wory about crushing this material when thru bolting as it works in place of marine ply. I have seen Stringers and floors in older Ski Nautiques Fabricated out of Coosa.
Give it a Look.
