View Full Version : Bleeding Blower Case

After my last run on the lake, I noticed a lot of oil all over the rear of the boat...
Once I had it back in the garage and cleaning it up; I noticed oil leaking quite a bit from the under the top blower pulley snout area.
I removed the belt... then the snout assembly, after draining the remaining oil from the case. I suspected a oil seal in this part had failed... Once apart it was confirmed.
What I am hearing.... Since the blower "pressurizes" the engine; it in turn pressurizes itself...back through the gear area out to the snout.
Some folks then put a release pressure push-button release valve there where the fill plug would be..? The down side is if you do it too often the air that is trapped there under pressure is fuel laden... it thins down the 90 weight oil and could damage the gears and bearing quickly....
Rebuilders are saying, " find a release valve... your warranty is voided "...
All this Myth to Truth..?
I might also say... Too bad Wieand should put the "seal number" on this seal as I can not find it as a standard as well... 2.44"ODx.312Wx1.375shaft
Nothing special EXCEPT it is two-peice steel shieled both sides.... not like the standard "stamped" seals we all see everyday.... Mine is the 8-71 case, but I see from some sources online it does not matter 6-71 or 8-71... same, but NOT available by itself..?:confused::(
Thoughts..???

First off if you are getting pressure from the manifold in the front bearing housing where the oil is then there are serious issues with the blower. That is a sealed compartment from the rotor side of the front plate. If this is the case you would be putting oil in it all the time because it would be running out and down into the intake and you would be burning it through the engine.

As for the purpose of the pressure relief valve on the front gear cover it is there to relieve the pressure from the gear oil expansion from when you run it. It should build very little pressure. You should only have to push it once in a while. I have one on mine and I very rarely touch it. Voiding your warranty for not having a pressure relief valve sounds like BS to me.

As for parts and seal I would go to BDS which is located in Whittier, Ca. They service any and all superchargers. Here is a link to there web site.

Yep, they're made for the "show and shine" crowd!.. BDS is not the greatest either, Littlefield is pretty well tops now since the best has passed a way!....:(

He doesn't use their blowers, unless somebody wants one, just the components. He does his own blowers and they work...:D

Well shoot guys....
Wieand may be the "junk in the trunk" but darn... It was on the motor when built for now. I agree with going even to a BDS sometime... I don't plan to race this... Heck... still trying to get the wife to even go out (she did one round around the lake though )...
If this thing will do 80-90... that is fine... It is a lake romp...romp... Nothing more cool than a BLOWN Big block...yes..? What would be as fun for eye candy... A staggered tube injection ( Old School ) which I may do for next Summer time.
Just having fun right now... :)
As for the pressure build up... On my first launch... The idler pulley seized... dragging and destroyed the belt to get back... I think it might have overheated the snout area and ruined the seal..?
Anywho guys... Thanks for the info...
Putting this thing back together and going out again this Sunday... :)
Last thought...? What oil ( easily available ) for engine oil... 468BBC, aluminum heads, 8-71, again... just a lake boat for fun... but noticed a foul smell to the oil when I changed it.... I have heard of "marine" grade of oils... really >>?

What's his business name, maybe I know/heard of him??

He's a local Sacramento guy Mark Hall. The whole family's been into racing for years, his dad and uncles ran roadsters at all the tracks around here, under the Hall Bros name. Mark had a speed shop here, Hall Bros Performance, but he's working out of his shop at home now. Sacramento Supercharger is the blower business. Marks a great guy and very knowledgeable he's also a racer so he's got a lot of hands on experience.....:D

The older stuff is good, after they were bought out there were some design changes made that were good for the bottom line and not the quality...:(:(

Turbo's can work amazingly well, but ya gotta remember visually they just don't cut it in an open motor situation...after all it's gotta look cool doesn't matter if it works...  I know a guy with a 288" SBC putting out 1200+ hp with a turbo set up, and he said there was more!!!
