View Full Version : Need Banks exhaust logs

Help me! I just found out that one of the exhaust logs for our Schiada is cracked and I don't think it can be repaired.:( Does anybody out there have a set of banks logs for a BBC? I understand that the Harman or Hardin manifolds are the same thing so those would work for me also (if the rumor is true). Let me know if you can help. Otherwise we will have to be bumming rides in September.

Paul I have a set of Hardins. I do not know if they are water tight as I just pulled them off an engine and never used them. Let me know if I can help.

"HARDINS" are the one's with water along the flange. That's what you need.

Bingo! That is what I was led to understand. I did not know how to describe it though. Thanks George. Why exactly is it that those are preferred for the turbo application? It is cracked inside the exhaust in a precarious area.
I will try to take a picture tomorrow and post it up to see if they match what you have Matt. If they are the same I will take them off of your hands.
With how things are going I am going to have to pull off a miracle to get this boat to the river, but I am going to do everything in my power to make it happen. Wish me luck.

Paul,
These are what I have. They are yours if you want them. I would like to keep the risers if you don't need them. The polish on the outside is decent not great. On the side toward the block they need repolish. A little pitting in areas but not bad enough to worry. Like I say I have not put pressure on these so I'm unsure/unaware of any cracks. They were sitting up for a long time before I got them. Came from a California boat that never ran when it got here to Arkansas so I doubt that they would have froze. Any way let me know.

Matt, those are different than the ones we have. (I really need to get a picture up). Thanks though.

Paul, the water goes in at the flange to the head and then goes down to the collector by going OVER each passage. This reduces the metal temps in the "hot turn" and then allows the water to go quickly out the tail pipe. The cracks seem to take place just after a 'long hot pull' and then a quick shutdown to idle. High EGTs then cool(idle) EGTs with lots of cool water QUICKLY cooling the aluminum castings. When you get it back together, don't go to idle quickly from boost! Banks, PFM, Hardin, same manifolds.

Thanks for posting the pictures dad.
George, I figured that was the case, but just wanted to hear it from someone that "knows" instead of me just guessing that was the case. Our deal is unique, as you can see the bolts that are at the top of the flange hold the carb mount (as you may have guessed this is not a true Banks setup). They made custom stainless risers where the turbos and waist gates mount that are nice pieces. I would not be totally opposed to going to a whole new setup, but with the hopes of making to the river in September it made sense to use the system I have (not to mention the fact that it worked great for us before and we are not trying to make a bazillion horse power). You guys have been a huge help as I had asked around on other forums with no luck.
On a side note I took our leaking intercooler cores to a friend and he is going to take care of me there. He said if he could not fix them he would make me some brand new cores for a "very friendly" price. If is good to have friends.

Oh, I forgot to ask one thing George, in looking for a set someone was telling me that the outlet bolt pattern was different for the Hardin's and the Banks. Do you know if this is true or not? They were saying something about the one being a diamond shape while the other was square.
George, if we pull this off we will have to drag you around the river for all the help you have given.

You have not seen how big my family is. With them along there will not be enough room in the boat. We will have to tie him to the end of a rope and actually drag him up and down the river. Well, if one of my siblings decides to be a pain, then Georges rope will be getting used so there may be an extra seat in the boat.:D

Dumb rookie question but what happens if you run a manifold that is not cooled at the flange ? I only ask because I am considering a twin turbo set up for my boat .

Paul, they look similar but they are plain Glenwoods, they don't have the water passage on the flange, not sure if you can use them or not??..

Paul, I think the deal is like this; All of the manifolds have round flanges at the outlet. Some have 'open areas' in that flange, some don't. The "square" or "diamond" shape would refer to studs mounted at "12 and 6, 3 and 9" VS "10 and 4, 2 and 8" (on the clock) I would weld up that area on ANY USED manifolds, and mount studs as needed. What about making a "5 piece" manifold (new part)? Mill out a center block with exhaust passages, then weld in plates that cover those passages, then weld/bolt covers over the water jacket areas. Tubes in a "water box"? I really don't like "rebuilding" those exhaust manifolds.

O.K. The diamond thing makes sense now. That would not be a problem as we can drill new holes and weld up the old ones. Being that I am in a time pinch and don't want to re-invent the wheel I am going to stick with the old stuff and make it work. Maybe in eight to ten years when we rebuild this thing I will look into the latest tricks for this deal. I could not have been able to pull this off without everybody's help on this site. THANKS!

Louis, I already did that and am seeing if we can pull something together. I have found a few sets through my efforts so I "SHOULD" be O.K. The only way to really know is to get them here and pressure check them. I have my fingers crossed. The heads had to go back to the machine shop to get shorter valves in order to get the rocker geometry right, so we have a number of things to overcome still. Keep your fingers crossed.
