Daytona Boats, were there more than one builder. Riverracer had a circle boat. A friend of my had a 19` mini daycrusier ( the one Scarlatta had for sale), and then of course the mini`s, 12.6`, 16`, and the 18` all I believe were out boards. I heard they were in Hunington Beach.

Yep Sundown Marine, that was Bob Long and he also made a jet that looked just like the flat, he also made some fairly large boats also!..

Sundown Marine, huh didn`t they used to rent boats. I think I say a couple of Hondo`s for rent back around 77ish 78. So this is the say guy who built all these different boats? I knew a guy who had a crusier about 24` or 25` black with the red and orange fades with a turbo motor. I think he was a plumber or something with construction. Jack, I think was his name. I think it got stolen at the river? maybe. Anyway same guy for all of these boats?

That little Daytona is for sale on Rosco across from Tommy`s. Right? By the 405? 2000.00 or best?

Sundown marine was owned and operated by Bob Long and Brian (pops) Davidson they were partners.

Dennis Evans worked for them.

The Daytona sprints were built from the original Biesemeyer molds that they bought from Bill Moore.

Thank you, yes it was a bare hull when I got it bought everything new and a bunch of aluminum and built it all myself!. First motor was a 440 ran 106, the last one was a junk low compression pos 468, best it ran was 97 but it just ran and ran!.... No there's cockpit room but it's a race boat, motor sits forward you could still put rear seating but the front seats would be too close to the dash as far as I'm concerned, I want free exit if it becomes necessary, know what I mean!...:D

Some info about Daytona boats.
Bob was a dealer for us (Miller Boats) in the 70's along with his partner Brian who opened up a Sundown Marine in Washington. Both were retired LAPD that worked homocide.
We designed and built the plug and then the molds for the 26' Daytona in the mid seventies, took about a year. We also built the first 5 or 6 of them. Bob took the molds to someone else later because we started getting really far behind with our own boats.
I have no idea what happened to Daytona, however, my guess is the 1980 depression probably put them out of business along with many other boat companies including Spectra.

I stated that wrong, I know Bob was in Huntington Beach, I must of delivered 50 boats to him there. I meant that Brian later opened up a Sundown Marine in Washington.
I didn't know about the trouble Bob got into. He was a really nice guy!!!
Well, it would wind up being one of three evils that got him:
1. 1980 depression
2. The IRS
3. Frivilous lawsuits

We had products liability, very expensive even back then.
I had an attorney call me from Washington around 1989 asking about a boat we built in 1979 (for Sundown Marine in Wash.) and if it was covered by products liability. I asked why, he said the owner was selling the boat and was giving a ride to a potential buyer. They forgot to pull up the anchor, so when the boat took off, the anchor flew into the boat and hit the buyers girlfriend.
He then asked if the owner bought the anchor from us and is the boat covered by products liability. I lied and said no!!! He hung up on me.

The problem with insurance companies is they almost always settle out of court no matter how stupid the suit is. This attorney was fishing for some free money so I lied.

This is why Products Liability insurance is so expensive, too many stupid lawsuits and too many retarded people that believe they are never responsible for what they do.

The 80's were very rough years for boat mfgs.
The biggest problem happened in April 1980. The government forced banks to cut loans to 75% of what they loaned in 1979. Carter was behind this idea to stop inflation, really brilliant. Well, interest rates shot up to 25% damn near overnight. Put our country in the worst recession ever. Pretty much screwed up all of the 80's. Our company built less than half of what we built in the 70's. Then to top it off, we lost most of our dealers as well. This problem was caused by a guy (don't remember his name) with lots of money that was a distributor for the cheap boat mfgs. He would offer cheap boats on consignment to boat dealers but the dealer would have to drop selling other companies boats, namely us, sanger, etc. I can't remember the piece of shit's name but he ruined even more boat mfgs.

Sorry for getting carried away but I'll never forget how shitty all this was.

John, would you be talking about the distributor "Cal Custom"? Carl Koster?

Carl Koster, That's the shithead!!!! Thanks!
I had at least 3 of our dealers tell me what was going on. They really felt bad about the deal but they had no choice. Sales were down and interest rates were out of sight. They liked us and wanted us to know the real truth.
