View Full Version : Bilge pump pickup

Bigblock

Most bilge pumps on the market still leave about 10 - 12 mm of water in the bottom of my boat. This is due to the gaurd around the bottom of the pump making it sit up off the floor.
This equates to a lot of water still on the floor.
What are people using in there flat bottoms to get more of the water out?
Is there a particular pump you guys are using with a different style of pickup?

Thanks
Bigblock

An old towel Mate...While all the water is being wiped up, it's a good time to check for loose stuff...:D:D:D

Good advise there!.... I use J drains keep them clean and you won't have water in the boat!..

Abbottcraft a towel is the norm at the moment.:D
I was hoping for something new and improved:D

J Drains

Is there 2 types - 1 with the hole in the middle and 1 with a full flap that opens at the bottom?
Even mounted at the bottom you would still hold water???
Do you have a pic of yours mounted RR?
They are still better than doing a bung run thats for sure.

The J drain is the one with the flap, the one with the hole is a duck bil, works but ugly!.. This is the only pic I have, it's not a good one but you can still see them, they saved my ass from sinking more than once!... I bore the hole from the inside flush with the floor, then center them on the outside, they will drain dry. Just have to remember to make sure they are "clean" before you launch, all it takes is a grain of sand and they will leak, but if you do get water it'll drain while under way!....

Beautiful boat RR.
As for selling it, boats are like houses, once you buy you never sell. Shame on you RR.:p

RR do you still run a bilge with those flaps fitted?
It is law here for this size boat to have either a bilge or a bucket with a rope tied to it for bailing.

The J drains are a lot smaller than i imagined now that i can see them installed. Only about 1" x 1" or so.
No disrespect RR but they are not for me. I have another thread on here about heat exchangers to keep the Murray river mud and weed out of my motor. Gives you an idea as to how much craps around. :mad:If a grain of sand will keep it open then im sure i will have nothing but problems with them leaking.

(You are getting the wrong idea about the j drains there is NOTHING better for a flatbottom, period.
My boat has been in our family for 41 years and we have tried everything out there and the j`s are the best installed correctly.
Leadsledmerc can attest to this i had the discharge from my bilge pump come off last year while hanging on a shallow (2feet) sand bar. When i went to leave there was a lot of water in my boat and it only took about 50 yards to be bone dry.
Rethink the drains they work and only hang open on the trailer when you order get the rebuild kits and if you feel they are getting stiff change em out.)

The unit is 2"x2" the hole is 1", but dirty water or not they still work, it's when they are dry before launch you have to make sure there is no crap because as soon as you back into the water they close instantly and if anything is there it won't let it seal, but when under way it all washes out!..

RR, our rules here in Oz are very strict. Too many boating death and accidents. In the link below about half way down you will see a list of have to haves when boating.

Where are you suppose to store all that stuff???
I particularly like the pair of oars & rowlocks! I can just see all the ski race boats fronting up with their bucket & line and waterproof torch, anchor and oars.... I DON"T THINK SO

My suggestion for what it's worth.... put the bilge pump in (wired up or not) to keep the maritime officers happy and FIT the j valves. They really do work!
or maybe you could tow a small dinghy and put all the requirements in there... yea! that's a good idea. Just be careful it doesn't get tangled in the ski ropes.:p:D LOL

Only in Mexico (that's what we in NSW affectionately call Victoria... south of the border)
Sorry couldn't help myself

Touche!
Did you go for a drive and got lost!!! Shurely you didn't go down there on your own accord...
Your'e right, the Maroons (Qld state football side) squashed us again:(

I've used the j drains in ski boats and race boats with no real probs. Like RR said buy some repair rubbers at the same time and check the drains each time before launching and keep them clean...
I still can't believe that ALL rec power boating including ski racing (or are they exempt) will carry all that gear (I'm tempted to call it crap, but I understand sort of why the authorities have introduced it.) Too many low performance boaters on the water!!!
Cheers

They are strict but it is good!. I always wear my Lifeline in the boat, I do get a kick out of "approved PFD's" though, they'll get you killed but they are approved, LOL, we have the same thing here and they can/will give you a ticket if you don't have any on board, even if you're wearing a Lifeline and helmet!..:D

Water don't pour in they just dribble, don't forget there's water pressure against them, you'd have to have a log or something stuck in the hole to hold the flap open, I've had mine leak and had the boat sit in the water for 6 hours and barely had a quart in the bilge!..

The cane toads and cockroaches are the state emblems for our rugby league (football) state teams.
The cane toads were introduced back whenever to try and eradicate a beetle that was infesting the sugar cane. It worked but too well and the toads took over. they look bloody ugly and have themselves become the pest!
I'm not sure of the history of the beloved 'cocky' cept to say they also are an unwanted pest that most people hate and kill on sight!
We just love to bag (ridicule) each other until an outsider sticks their nose in. A bit like brothers and sisters fighting until someone else hurts one of the brothers or sisters then it's game on!

The trick to J-Drains is when you install them be sure that the rubber does not get twisted up by the screws that hold the block on.. And from now on never leave your boat left uncovered under trees...Leaves are now your boats worst enemy......:D:D:D

from what I'm reading most of our boats would only need the pfd, fire extingisher, a flashlight that floats and that's about it, unless you are going out into salt water. Our boats are, generally speaking, over 15' and under 24' so most of the other provisions wouldn't apply to us as we don't have closed floor compartments, or covered bilges. Having a flashlight in the boat does make sense. And all the other stuff we usually have mounted or with us anyways. Would J Drains qualify as a manual bilge pump?

No mate they would not.
At a minimum you would need a bucket with a rope attached to it. Its a bit funny how the rules read. Some people say you need to have both on board.(a bilge and bucket)

A quick story, one time at the river a guy left his boat anchored for about six hours, and from a lot of boats going by causing wakes got a lot of water splashed in the boat and water was well over the stringers, well he had plugs no J drains. He panicked not knowing what to do, so I hooked up to the boat and I told him to pull the plugs, he almost $shit but he did it, I took off with the boat and towed it for about a mile and brought it back dry, J drains went on immediately!..:D

Funny you should bring that up. the first time I had the opurtunity to drive my dads old Flat was under the same conditions at the Colorado River about 1966. I was nine years old, the boat had been anchored bow out for about six hours and yet it was half full of water. He was very calm and he fired up the boat had me run it up just off plane and he crawled back their and pulled the plugs till it drained out. A can Coors Beer in one hand the whole time!!
