Hi there;
Looking to R/R the fluid in my 71C velvet drive, the dipstick says "Type A fluid". The parts store guy says he has never heard of it, my looking on the web has revealed a little bit of info, is this just thin hydraulic fluid?
What should I use on the drain and fill?
Thanks
JB

Hey JB,
Your parts store guy hasn't heard of it , because he's probably not old enough to know of it.
There is a type A fluid, used in older automatic transmissions, pre'68 I think, but don't hold me to it.
From my experience with restoring cars, I know that Valvoline does make a "Type FA" trans fluid, maybe other brands as well, but this will satisfy sixties Fords and earlier, If I'm not mistaken.
I read somewhere that the F, and A fluids are thicker than the Dexron/Mercon types used today, kind of a "Trick Shift" in usage.
Ask a guy at your local trans shop(make sure he has a little grey hair).

Before Dextron there was Type F (Ford) and Type A for everything else, they didn't have any anti foam agents in them, the Dextron does and can be used just can't be mixed, so if you clean it out you can use Dextron, or if you want to stick with Type A it's still being made today!... I read this $hit in a magazine once!..

Type A! (http://www.warrenoil.com/product_warren_trans.html)

Thanks, I am interested in the synthetics, my only concern would be if it was more prone to leakage.
Have a great day.

No more than any other oil if sealed up right!.
