Okay I need some help and advice here. I have two mags. One Vertex and on Mallory Sprint Mag. Neither one of them are working. The vertex has been nothing but a pos for me. I have sent it back to a guy(who shall remain nameless as I dont dis, only give good recomendations) and it always gets a new coil. I need to know the best mag guy that you guys know of. I dont care if this mag is junk, just want to know why it has never ran more than 3 heats for me since I bought it used. When I bought it was supposedly just re-done. If it is junk then great, if its not then I want it fixed for at least a season of trouble free racing. I can't have it being an unreliable pos. The other mag is a mallory sprint mag. It has very little time on it but it has no spark any more either. I want them both to be good and reliable. So give me names in Canada or the US.
Thanks Brian

Well, I just can't understand why you have so much problems with a Vertex, but there has to be a reason for sure, send it to Zig he'll fix it and it'll WORK, unless there's another problem???!..

That is what I was wondering, if there was another problem with it. I like them, but I just am tired of mine being a pos. Does he do Mallory stuff to?

Well just checked out Don Zigs web site. Yes the do all mags, however right now they are so busy that they are not accepting any new jobs. Guess that means something.

Well, I was thinking possibly something is killing the mag, not the mag itself????, but then again if the mag wasn't put together right to begin with then????... Yeah he does Mallory mags too!..

I was looking a Don Zigs web site yesterday and they have a notice posted on every page that they are NOT accepting any new repairs at this time due to the over load of repairs that they have at this time. FYI.

Hello Shooter , I am a fellow Canadian living in Ontario at Lake Erie near Windsor ( Windsor is across the Detroit river from Detroit , for you American folks ) . Are there races in Ontario ? . Where do you race? Would love to go out and see them sometime.

Good move Art. I've been up North in the winter. When I was a kid used to visit my Grand Pa's farm north east of Calgary in the summer. Then one year my parents decided to spend Christmas there. I think I just warmed up last Friday.:D

Jeez you mean there is something other than cold ? .......Whats it called ?
( just kidding the Windsor / Detroit area is regularily in the 90's in the summer months . Sometimes with about 200% humidity from all of the water around here from : Lake St. Clair which flows into the Detroit river and from the Detroit river it flows into Lake Erie on it's way through the Great Lakes system . Windsor is kind of surrounded on 3 sides by water ) . ( there's your geography lesson for the day. There'll be a test later . )
River Racer I am surprised!!!!!! You even lived in Windsor? I live in the Colchester area which is just past Amherstburg. I launch the hot rod in a nice little marina in Colchester . It has the paint scratches from rubbing against the pilings to prove it .
Roaddogg thanks for the heads up , the unlimiteds are always a hoot to watch . Just got to be ready for the traffic on Belle Isle after the show.LOL ( Belle Isle is an island in the Detroit river for you folks not from here ).
Sorry Shooter did'nt mean to steal your thread. :o

Not a problem. We have all done it before. Last weekend we were racing in Brockville. That is our only race here in Ontario. But there is some stuff in Michigan and Ohio. Check out APBA.org for the schedule, or cbfnc.ca, or hydroplanequebec.

Brian who'd you end up sending your mag (mags) to?

Are you running: solid (stainless steel) core wires, non-resistor spark plugs with a gap from .018" to .024", and a good Cole Hersee (not a Chinese POS) kill switch? Two different brands of mag and neither works without problems. I think most guys who run mags do so to avoid problems. The Vertex has a stronger generator than the Mallory "Mini" or "Sprint" mags, the Mallory "Pro" has the strongest generator, and it takes a little more HP to pull it ( IMO blower motors only)

We have actually had terrible mag problems this year. Let me go back though. My vertex has been a problem since I boought it used from a competitior. I never got more than 3 heats out of it before it messed up. So I know there is some sort of deep problem with it. The Mallory Sprint mag was my spare ignition. It rode around in the back of my truck for a season, I think the dampness may have had a hand in this one messing up.(sorry no enclosed trailer at that time). We always ran solid core wires on these mags. The plugs were c59 racing plugs by champion. This thread was started because our MSD sprint mag crapped out. It seems as though a few of the guys have been having problems with these systems this year. Gp 777 has had numerous problems with boxes and mags. Ok to end this both of my mags were acting up before we tried them in the new boat and motor. I am just fed up with them and either want to throw them out or get them fixed.

Here is one more "vote" for Hunt Magnetos in Ranco Cordova (Sacramento) California.
I sent my Vertex OAC mag to them for check-out and repairs after I bought mine used.
The service was great (and fast) and they were very "friendly" to deal with.

Good luck. No, really...they have their place.

Yeah well it was an MSD super mag that we were running and it crapped out. Think it was the coil. But I am bringing my spare Vertex with me this weekend to Valleyfield.

Well now I got a good story from Burley. This boat never ran worth $hit the whole time until Sunday!. Wayne just replaced the Vertex with a "brand spankin new" high dollar "Mallory Super Junk III", first test and tune on Friday was a dud so first thing was to look at the fuel system, "hey check the points" fuel system checked out ok, maybe it's the kill switch?? "hey check the points" well kill switch works, ok it runs on the trailer, next round of test and tune it lasts a half a lap and takes another $hit. Ok check the fuel system again "hey check the points" I'm told it's a "new" ignition again and that's not the problem, ok fine whatever, go thru the whole thing and everything is in good working order!.. Saturday first heat, did the parade lap and on the start it freight trained to the first corner and took a $hit again and got towed in. Well, this time it won't even start on the trailer, dead, kaput so now what, "hey check the points", ok gotta be the kill switch, ok unhook the kill switch and now we have full power and if it starts we kill it with the fuel shutoff, well no problem there it don't start, ok pull a plug wire and check for spark, holy $hit howdy we have no spark, now ain't that the $hits,LOL, hey guys "CHECK THE FKN POINTS ALREADY" so finally off comes the cap and top and guess what we see, points are totally fried black as can be and the fibre deal that rides on the cam was gone melted off!.. So, out comes the POS and back in went the Vertex and it fired right up!.. Second heat it ran better than it did from the start, the bad part is it wiped out the bronze gear(that is another story there)so he got towed in again!. Well, we got that fixed and Sunday was just great, with an experinced driver we would have smoked em big time!.. Needless to say the Vertex stays in and the Mallory Super Junk III goes back!.. Hmmmm, another thought wonder why all the sprint car guys run a Vertex, can't imagine why!...
