Hello all , I am new to v drives, I have had several jets but needed to go faster.:D Anyway I have a question for you guys. I put together a Hondo ski hydro this winter and it is a little squirley when you get it rolling fast, also it gets really crazy if you let off the throttle too fast:eek: I was wondering , it only has 1 skeg under the pass side , but it is molded but not ever been drilled to put one on the drivers side. Do you think it would help to add 1? it is 1980 original , so why only 1 from factory? or is this just the nature of the beast? thanks

The reason for the fin on the right side is because the rotation of the prop drives that sponson down and lifts the opposite one, thus you only need one fin to control the boat. You save the drag of the unneeded fin.
I don't have any experience in ski hydros but it sounds like you may have the right prop and enough power to lift the tail. If you back out of the throttle suddenly the tail drops and the nose comes up and can sponson walk and start searching. If you have outboard steering and have any wheel cranked in before it drops it can get real crazy. If a drag hydro loses an ear off a prop it's like pulling back on the stick in an airplane.
Without being in the boat it's hard to say what might be causing your squirley problems. Nose weight, rudder depth, strut and engine position, rigging all can have adverse affects on handling.

I think its just the nature of the boat, I was just checking. It is kinda fun scarring the crap out of people riding in it .:p
