Ok guys, I know I posted this question on the previous site but I didn't get a chance to write down your suggestions. So if you wouldn't mind helping out again.
Suggestions on a good overall cam. One that isn't super racey and is ski-able. I would like it to be able to ski with it but still move and not be a sled....
One more - what's a good brand of valve springs to go with? I don't have roller rockers.

What prop you got, and what kind of rpm's we talking about!..

I have a 12x14 Menkins and for RPM's I'm not sure, I would like it to have a some more top end but still be ski-able. Right now the motor is done at about 6k.
I wish the old site hadn't gone down, there was so much reference material. I knew I should have written down the info...

Without going into the specific numbers about the cam, I will say to buy the cam, lifters, springs, retainers, and keepers from one manufacturer. Order it as a kit..........MP

What do you have for a cam now??, I would change the prop myself!..

What and and why would you change the prop? As for the cam now it's just an RV cam. I don't have the durations with me.
I'm looking for something with good performance but is still skiable. There were some good suggestions when I asked this on the old site but I didn't get a chance to make a note of them. Who would have thought we'd lose all that info...

Changing the prop is considerably easier than changing the cam. Beg, borrow or steal an 11x15 and see if your "skiability" and top end don't improve. The 12 inch prop is probably holding the motor down in the lower ranges, and the 14 pitch is holding the top speed down after the boat gets dry. An 11 incher will allow the engine into the "happy place" alot sooner, and the 15 pitch will increase the top speed just a bit.........The info you need is critical, a good GPS for speed, and a good tach with a memory...Using that info you will have a baseline to work from with the 12x14 prop, and you will see the results, good or bad, right away. Making changes without current and future data is a crap shoot at best. A lot can be said for the "seat of the pants" feeling, but real data is needed to monitor what really happens. ALSO, make changes ONE THING AT A TIME............Ray

That about sums it up, and yes only change one thing at a time!...

well I'm actually sending th prop off to get it checked and refinished. should I have it taken down? Tom asked me when I talked to him if I liked the way it drove with the prop now.

But why waste the time? Do it all at once and save alot of time. JUST KIDDING. Small steps will get you there faster. Try lots of props if you can, and gears as well. Leave the motor alone until you get the boat working.

Mike,
I put mine together w/ a cam that my head guy picked out from Comp cams. Ill go to the other house later tonight and get the specs. The motor is a 427 w/ 990 heads, tunnel ram and 660's. The boat gets w/ the program and pulls my Dad sking just fine. Give me a couple of hours and Ill have it up for you.

I'm supposed to call Tom Bentley again this week before I send him my prop. From what I see that you all have and your recommendations I'll probably have the prop taken down.

That prop needs to be cut down and maybe tweaked a bit, send it to Tom and get it fixed and then try it before you mess with the motor you may not need to, remember "one change at a time"...

Ok, so if I'm not going to change the cam at this time but I need to change the valve springs because the engine hasn't been run in atleast 10 yrs. I'm not sure what to go with. The stock specs are: 303-327@1.38" .
Thanks again for the help.

Look up your cam and see what the MFG recommends for springs, I usually run 150 on the closed for flat tappets!..
