90 Db Sounds pretty loud until you actually hear it.

What is the norm for mufflers etc.

I Have Hardin Water cooled headers with lrg snails and trumpets w/o mufflers on a cammed 454, Will this be to loud in my daycruiser?

All boats must have an operating "muffling device" and water is not considered a muffling device anymore. The new testing law is 86db at one meter from the boat at idle, no more testing out on the water!..

So, no more J1970? Maximum level 75 db(a) at ANY distance and any engine speed, with the instrument situated on or adjacent to the shoreline?

No, 86db at one meter from the transom at idle only!...

Cool. CA and AZ?

But will I be too loud

That's 86db at idle in the water I hope. I'm good there as exhaust is underwater and under the swimstep but once I roll in some throttle all bets are off.

But will I be too loud

Probably, who knows just get it checked!...

I have only been checked with a DB meter twice but stopped several times and it always comes up. It depends on the lake. The way they checked me was 3 feet from transom, 1 foot from water level, at idle. At idle there is no water in headers, making it even more difficult than the previous method of cruise or full throttle at 50 feet.

Well, with this new law it's actually better because now it's 86db at idle 1 meter from the transom period, but you still have to have a muffling device so if you pass that then you're good to go no matter how loud you are at WOT!..

In Calif, you can go up to 90 DB if the engine is old enough. I don't know what the break off date is. My problem is getting it down to 90 DB with mufflers that don't choke the engine to death when the water comes on at 1500 RPM.

Did a little research!..

Beginning in February, Arizona will be changing the level and method of measuring noise levels from Recreational Boats.

AZ will be adopting the SAE J2005 (Stationary) and SAE 1970 (Shoreline) Standards. (These are the same standards used by California since 2005)

For the J2005 test, the maximum level will be set at 88-90 db(a), measured 1 meter off the water and 1 meter back from the exhaust outlet with the engine(s) at idle. (The level depends on year of engine manufacture. Before Jan 1, 1993 - 90dba. On or after Jan 1, 1993 - 88 dba)

For the J1970 test the maximum level is 75 db(a) at ANY distance and any engine speed, with the instrument situated on or adjacent to the shoreline.

The reasoning for the new standards is that most noise complaints come from those in Marinas and along shorelines. The new methods and levels are meant to alleviate those complaints by making standards that target those areas.

Since Marina's and areas directly adjacent to the shore are generally "no wake zones," the J2005 (stationery) standard will deter excessive noise in those areas.

And the J1970 (Shoreline) standard will keep loud boats a suitable distance from the shore.

Under the new standards there will no longer be testing out on the lake. The old 86 db @ 50 feet "pass-by test" is gone. Testing will only be done at idle or from the shoreline (or a from a boat directly adjacent to the shoreline).

The requirement for all boats to be equipped with effective muffling systems, in good working order and in constant operation, remains in effect. Silent Choice or other switchable exhaust being run in the "OPEN" or "BY-PASS" position are still illegal.

I have been lucky. Running dry pipes with resonator tips this past summer on Clear Lake almost every weekend. So far soo good. Seen a zoomie here and there cruising right in front of town. I think the boat cops have been paying more attention to unsafe boaters (jet skis, PWCs). They have been cool and relaxed to us noisy guys lately. Waves.

Nice to know its not just down here that the PWC and the jetski brigade get under peoples skin.... you would not believe some of the incredibly stoopid things we saw up the river over the holiday weekend.....or maybe you would...

Cheers
