Removed the Rubrails to prep for paint.
(Previous owner cleared over the gel and it was coming off)

And there is an open Seam about a 16th of an inch with small drill holes above and belowthe seam, spaced about every 12 inches. The rivit body is in the seam, Drilled the heads off to get the rail off.

The inside of the hull is glassed but there is the seam on the outside which looks to be exposed.

Leave it alone or fill it with resin Or what would you suggest

I will suggest to you what i have done, but i must stress that i have only got to the primer stage and this is the first time i have done this, and i have not painted or for that matter tested my work in the water. But it looks good so far.
If you want a smooth look with no rub rail, i would suggest grinding the seam with a circular disk - i used a 4'' angle grinder - to enlarge the seam - this will allow you to fill the seam with new fibreglass and resin.( epoxy or polyester is your choice- although i like epoxy).
I filled mine with fibreglass tape 1'' thick and then 1/1/2'' tape on top.
Once you have glassed it, you can smooth it with bondo - sandable filler.
But please, ask around and do research before you grind.
best of luck,
Tommorrow when i am at work i will try to post pictures of what i am talking about.

I plan on replacing the rail. I Was wondering if it could cause problems down the road if left that way under the rail.

But I am curious about what you have going on and would love to see it.

If you're gonna reinstall the rail, I would clean the seam out thoroughly with some acetone, run a bead of silicone into the seam and install the rail and screws back into it before it set up all the way. That should also seal the bow so air can't escape in the unfortunate event something terrible should happen. Any input on this guys? :)

Shouldn't be a problem this was pretty much the way it was done when a rub rail was used. hm66Howard's concern about sealing off the deck should be taken care of with the glass work inside. Although the quality of the work varied from builder to builder and some were a whole lot better than others...

This is normal, decks are glassed on from the inside only and rails are put on the outside to cover the gap on production boats, keeps the cost down!. Nothing beats a capped hull but it costs to have it done right, if you can do glass work you might want to follow Grayson on his deal sounds like he's getting it done right, but it's no big deal if you want to stick with the rub rail!...

Hey thanks for the good words Art.
I'll try to post some pictures now.
I only ground out a shallow dished groove - it looks like i did not but when i was grinding it felt like i was taking off heaps!
a few more things i did were
- filled the rivet holes with epoxy paste( high strength filler powder and epoxy resin mixed to form paste)
I used a syringe to inject the paste.
Then i filled the inner seam with the same paste to lay a more level/even base for the fibreglass tape to stick to.http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y62/centurion454/31082007014.jpg

Should be ok as long as the groove was ground out good, be careful with the Bondo though seems it always end up cracking, at least everyone that I've seen cracked????..
