Flywheel or flexplate on a v-drive?

If your thinking stock flexplate don't, without a converter they're way to flexable and the drive on the starter will push it back. The SFI approved are a lot better. I haven't dealt with a lot of them but the one I have is pretty stout and isn't very flexable. I've also used flywheels both aluminum and steel and they all work good. It probably comes down to your budget and intended use ( race, Lake etc) I just wouldn't use a stocker IMHO..

Flywheel is heavy, flexplate is light and revs quicker, flywheel builds up torque!.. If you use a flexplate make sure it's an SFI unit, stockers will flex while cranking, makes a mess of your nice anno motor plate!..

The stock flex plates will also flex enough to get the starter out of alignment and sometimes far enough that the starter will not hit the teeth.
There are only a few really good flexplates out there. J&W, CSR, Meziere, etc. The drag guys can't use them after their SFI certification is up. Lots of good used ones on the racing sites, or from friends that are racers for cheap. Stay away from the Pioneer made SFI plates. It is probably made by pioneer if they state in the ad ".035 thicker than stock flexplates." They are better than stock, but still have the flexing problems and just pretty much suck!

Good advice, tried a flex plate in a ski boat once... rattled and banged at idle something awful, no weight to smooth out the engine harmonics. Always used aluminum flywheels on drag stuff.

Jon, how long did you stay at the boat show? Send me your address so I can get you the barrel valve link.

You could use a billit flex plate. Thinner that an aluminium flywheel but way better that a flex plate...

That's because stock flexplates were meant to be bolted to a converter and run in a daily driver, that is the reason for the SFI flexplate because a stocker won't even hold up in a race car with moderate power!. I ran a SFI flexplate in my ski boat for years no problem at all, didn't even flex while cranking which is the main problem in a boat!..
