View Full Version : Conversion to EFI

A little daydreaming time here but what are the issues with converting the L88 in my cruiser to EFI? Is it a realistic venture? I am sure this is a modest motor by most standards here but would like to turn it between 5000-6000 max and for the most part would be a "cruiser". I just think the start and idle issues would be benificial. Would one be looking for the Mercruiser style or what?

Try Arizona Speed and Marine. We put one of there systems on a jet boat. Seemed to work good, and it was on a bbc.

I have played with EFI several years ago, I had a crower intake from an Early Mercury Marine racing program. that ran OK. I was in over my head at the time, but today it I had the money I think I could build a bitchen unit.
I dont know if Mercury build a rectangler port manifold for your L-88, and you would have to have some "custom" programing done. which is $$$"s

Merc. did build one for a rectangular port intake. I see them from time to time on Ebay, look under Kinsler sometimes they are there with all the EFI stuff also. Be aware it can get pretty spendy.

I've done a few systems over the years. What do you have (in the motor) and what do you expect to achieve? I can tell you that EFI "likes" strong vacuum readings, and that means 'mild' cam timing. 454/502 MPI Mercury systems are available in large port manifolds, but (out of the box) they have limitations on mods and top horsepower. "Mass air flow" VS "Speed density" are the two most common ways to control EFI. Each system has it's 'cheerleaders', but they never can agree on what is the most cost effective method, and where to start. I'm working on a Merc (L29) oval port 454 MPI for my turbocharged dually, and also triple throttle bodies on a 6-71 for my 400 Pontiac powered 55 Pontiac. PS Merc stuff has a 5000 (stock) or 5300 (racing) RPM rev limiter built into it.

Well, I can see quickly that I need to have more insite on what is actually inside my motor. I did not build my motor and have been unable to contact the original builder to find out what he put inside. I am going to attempt to determine some form of cam profile with a dial indicator and the nice degreed dampner but am not thinking of a way to determine compression ratio. It's also possible that I should just take a deep breath and be happy it starts, sounds, and runs good, and not mess with a good deal. Or just build an
EFI motor from scratch-------too much free time------

"If it works don't fix it!" Don't take apart a boat/motor that is running good at this time of year. If your motor has problems, then don't wait until it breaks, just fix it. EFI is really not that difficult to work with, and when done it is a joy to drive. I do have a "Cutler" standard deck large port EFI system available. Ran some dyno time with it on a 598" (outdrive style) BB Chevy. 2000 CFM billet throttle, 8- 68 lbs injectors, Hal Tech brain with 3 atmospheres (30 lbs of boost) big red 1000 HP fuel pump. Lap top programable. With 8 injectors it will support 900HP (@ 80%) and the hal Tech will support 16 injectors (second fuel pump) I have used these systems with turbos, fabricated intercooler over throttle body, and ganged (8 plus 8) injectors for 1500HP +. You can also run two 850 carbs (with the turbos) and get over 1500HP, but the "throttle responce is not the same". At WOT the tune up is the tune up, so I would say EFI has a performance advantage mostly in throttle responce, just like MFI, but your motor (tuned correcly) will make the same WOT power, with any well tuned intake system. $$$ VS ???

Not to mention better effeciency throughout the whole rpm range which will give better fuel mileage...

Fuel mileage? The only "hi-bred" you'll find around here would be a loaf of Wonderbread duct taped ontop of an injector hat. HA HA! "OK, this is the 'food chain' as I understand it". "From OPEC to Standard Oil, to the local station, to my tank, thru my motor, out the tailpipe, into your face!" "Oh, and every step of the way 'it's totally green', from start to finish".

Yep, but think about this, those countries want to bring us down and bombings and $hit don't do it, like 911 yeah a sad thing indeed but what did it actually do, it created jobs cleaning up and rebuilding!. But now they are hitting us where it hurts and they are doing a good job of it to bring us down which is their goal, but yet the government with all the "Political bullshit"won't do anything about it. The pres asked OPEC to produce more oil but said FK you and won't talk about it till September, bullshit we go over and bomb the shit out of the place and take over!. But nooooo we can't do that can we!....

Last week there was a guy who spoke for the oil companies on FOX NEWS. He said that the "tree huggers" are preventing us from producing our own oil. He said that if US oil companies could drill offshore in California and Florida, and they were allowed to build NEW refineries, we would have NO ENERGY PROBLEMS. I say, this country has done NOTHING to change our course of energy use/production even though we sat in "gas lines" back in the 70's. Now that "our leaders' want us to be GLOBAL, this means that they want all of us to be (lowered standards) equal to Bagladesh and 3rd world countries as far as workforce and income. Over the past 3 decades our "leaders" have forced "open trade" and " global economy", while selling out to big businesses moving abroad and using up cheap labor. Besides Edelbrock, what the hell is still ACTUALLY made in America? Not steel, not 100% of the US autos, not electronics, not even fruits and vegetables. What is the actual definition of TREASON? I feel I've seen treason being offered as "legislation" in the recent past.

illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous

entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

On a thread related note--got my Holley apart and back together last night. It's an 850DP #9380. PO had idle jets only 1/3 to 2 1/2 turns out no two even close to each other, and both floats screwed to the bottom. Primary power valve blown. Small wonder this engine fell on it's nose, wouldn't rev, and would even idle worth a darn. This is my first holley build so I got the Holley for Idiots book and tried to follow instructions. Now to get it back on the motor and adjusted properly--they make it sound so easy.

Right on. I heard today that it costs OPEC $2 a barrel to produce and we pay a new record high every day it seems. A person could go over to Mexico and get gas for $2 a gallon and they have a weaker currency than us? WTF!!
The problems are overseas and domestic. Maybe we should send the tree huggers over to the middle east to try to get them to stop the violence? This might sound bad but....quit sending our troops over there and just turn that place to glass...big red button style! Let the tree hugger plane land first??? Sorry, just a rant.

Don't know if anybody remembers this but back in the 80's ole Charles Manson said, "only way to end the $hit is to go over there and turn the whole FKN place into one big parking lot", I agree and it could be done over the weekend if they "really" wanted to put an end to this $hit, but too much money and politics won't allow that!..

Can I get SSI credits for figuring this stuff out? Really, I just need to sort out the 4 corner idle setup, the rest I think I got. Not a master tuner but it will help make the motor run better.

Understand. Overthinking the issue. Mechanical secondaries--why do you even need to mess with the secondaries? Your off idle before they open.
