I'm told this V-drive is a Casale Top Loader. I have a few questions and would appreciate some help here.
1) Is this a top loader?
2) Do I use gear oil in it? (90W?)
3) How do I check the oil level? I can't seem to find a plug like on a rear diff. Am I just looking in the wrong place?

This is on a boat that is new to me (I'm new to v-drives, period) and it seems to be low on oil inside the case. I stuck a straw down into it and only the bottom half inch was wet with oil.

Thanks in advance,
Rob

Yup, that's a Casale old style, square top, top loader; there are lots of them still in service; 'got one in my boat.

To change oil in the v-drive - Remove square top, suck old oil out (there is no drain plug). Refill with oil until it starts to run out the pipe plug to the right of the bottom shaft, screw in the plug and you're done.

Total capacity is less than 1 quart.

Use 90wt. gear oil minimum; for maximum protection use synthetic 75/140 gear oil.

If I just bought that and I didn't know the history on it, I would pull it out and turn it over and let it sit and drain completely and give it a good inspection, then make sure the v-drive is level and fill to the threads, and if you pour the oil in hard let it settle and let the excess run out, that way you won't be over filled!... But that's just me!..

Aquacraft,
I keep getting amazed by the knowledge base on this forum. 12 minutes go by and all of my questions are answered. I really appreciate it. If we meet some day, the first round is on me!
