Hi, anybody feel like racing our toys, there was talk of a sbc flatbottom class that was put before the holy saints at apba (lower case intentional) & blown off. I spoke with Tim /canam10 & suggested we might go in with unlimiteds light, as they are always looking for support races & would love to have boats east of & west of the mississippi. There was a spec stock engine, rules, & all the rest, but our great braintrust shot down our class, wasnt their idea, couldnt screw it up, who knows.
I like the idea, as I will be making cf, kevlar, balsa core hulls, & I havnt raced in over 20 years & could be rookie of the year again!!!!:D

It will happen by next year! We now have 4 racing up here in the 80mph class so they can peel off and run together. This may also be allowed in your area under Nostalgia Endurance and GNs. So get building!

I think Paul is going to be Rookie of the year in his carbon-kevlar wonder. But that is just me spouting off.

Bring on the pump gas small blocks! I would love to see the E-boats have a little low dollar class of their own.
I am very interested in your mold, and your lay-up plans for the boats.

As of right now the best place for small block boats to run is with the nostalgia class. Right now it works great being that you can build your boat how ever you want (big block, small block, high compression or whatever) and go race. I doubt apba will ever do anything to make it happen no matter how many people fight for it. Oh well.

Ya want cheap racing run Nostalgia, run what ya brung just don't go over 80, a $3000 ski boat will qualify as long as it meats safety rules. Small/medium/big block who cares go out and have fun!.. Class racing is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ don't matter what it is boat, car, motorcycle, go-cart whatever, and it don't matter what the power is and the speed, to be competive you have to be right on top of the rules and push it, and that takes money no matter what class you run, just look at all the different classes in any type and who the winners are, they are not your backyard racers!..

Paul, is that silver bullet going to Burley? Please say it is, we cant seem to generate 5 boats. I have sold my injection so there is tow money AND I have been offered a place to camp for free to all Nostaliga participants. You wont believe who offered this! Call me especially if you have no Motel reservations but still want to go!! OH by the way, the best E boat to ever run Nostalgia will be there to take on all big blocks!!!! Now I hope the california one shows up! Cant wait! All you hesitant Burley virgins had better reconsider this event! You can registeer off the APBa goboatracing web site or just show up.
So thanks to v-drivers all over this site we now have tow money, prizes, and donated gasoline! See you there Paul, and you better have a boat in tow or you'll never hear the end of it! :D

Boyd, I guess I better beg for forgiveness. We will not have a boat in tow. I feel it would be a bad idea to drag a boat a thousand miles without it being tested properly. If the boat and driver were comfortable together and had run a bunch of tanks of fuel through it I might give it a go. But with the boat, driver, engine and trailer all as uncertainties I feel it would be foolish to make the drive (or foolish for me anyway, I would not dare speak for others). If you did need a hand though we will be there for Friday and Saturday and would be glad to lend a hand if needed.

You just made the boys up here breath easier. We were talking about your boat yesterday and someone said it ran 100 in testing. I did not confirm that, merely smiled and asked them to be ready for anything. Usually, they bug me all winter to find out who will be their competition. This new competition and pressure should put some of our finest and fastest oldies in Idaho water. You and bro are most certainly welcome in my pits, and please, keep Art pushed to the back of the crowd, he has a devilish laugh I dont need to hear when race set up concentrating!
Bring some polishing compound and your cameras since Jerr isnt coming.

Boyd, You almost killed me from laughter.:p If our boat ran 100 with a pump gas small block we would have every racer in the nation calling us to build their engines. We should be able to find a few more MPH but I don't think we are going to have 20 MPH fall in our laps. We will be there with the cameras and will hopefully be able to take some pictures that we can be proud of. If we can't we have Louis that will cover our backs. I am really looking forward to meeting you as well as many others.

Dang, sounds like your running right at 80 (that's perfect) but then the altitude change will sure spank you & me. I have a small prop for a HP band-aide, I hope will work. Lets see, we're at 2000 and Burley is 4 adjusted to 6? How lean do I go? I was going toa 4-6 sizes lean and add power valves. More Marvel Mystery oil please! Might need your tune up help also! And Ditto. Gettin real antsey.

The original idea was to make this a spec crate engine class, & make it a claiming class! you drop 40k into the engine to win, it can be claimed for the price of the crate engine {that will kill the 145 bs of a rig the price of a house to win a plastic trophy!!!

The original plan was to have a low cost, reasonable speed(safe)
entry level runaboat class. Paul Grichar and Jeff Wooten set up a small
block that pulled enough horsepower to run in the low 80s is a real
raceboat. The displacement, type of heads, cam and carb were also
specified. The GM crate engines @ 330 HP were a base line. Greg
Barker has one in his Lavey. The others want to build their own.
We pushed this class for 4 years with only a negative response
from APBA. I have set up 3 boats that met the early engine proposal.
They all have chevy small block 355s. They all run well, some are
even fast. Our last engine for the Mandella was set up using the
specs but with a COMP hydraulic roller cam package @ .488" lift.
and Dart 180 cc Iron Eagle heads. It pulled 433 ft lbs @ 4100 and
398 HP at 5600. We are installing it now and should have it in the
water in two weeks. This should give us a second 80 mph boat.
We have 5 boats here in the midwest and just need a venue.
Nostalgia Endurance flatbottom sounds like the answer.

Based off of the response that the APBA has shown I have to agree with you and Art completely. True, it lacks the "all out" racing feel, but still provides a decent platform for cheap, competitive and fun racing.

I'm thinking 80 mph in a boat built heavy enough for rough water is pretty impressive with a fairly mild small block.
My first ski boat, a 57 Bies, had a warmed 350 and at Ming it ran an eye watering, scare you to death, 66 mph.:D

Well said Paul, but I gotta be fair to newbies to flats, when you are first starting out, 66 feels like 100+.
Another truisms about hot ski boats is, if it's comfortable to ski with it aint going to go 100 mph.

Our old Hallett could not have touched 85 if you dropped it off of a cliff, but it sure did spank a lot of 100 MPH jet boats. We would even do it with the whole family in it.:D It is hard to make excuses then.

I will tell you one thing, after driving my Lavey wide open without owning a GPS, and then driving this Biesemeyer cadillac, 79 feels like about 55. Scary to think since some of the hardware on that Lavey was less than "racer worthy"

Heck, no, just got beat this weekend by E39, yes a small block 16footer that ran 80.00000000 mph! My sled hit an unimpressive 75.7 and wounded itself. Maybe it's time to sell and put a mouse in the L boat.
