Ok, you all have been so helpful to me during this rebuild and I appreciate it very much! I need to tap into the knowledge bank one more time.
1. How do you go about setting up a Mag for timing? (set it to #1)
2. What is the best proceedure for adjusting Hydraulic Roller lifters?
thanks again.

I just time a mag just like a normal distributor (off the #1 plug wire like you said). It woks just fine for basic stuff like our boats.
As far that the hyd-rollers go, go with the manufacturers recommendations. Some like a 1/4 turn where some like a 1/2 turn from zero lash.

How do you check that the mag is on #1? do you have to pull the mag apart?

Mag is just like a distributer, you time it the same way!..

RR - I ordered a buzz box but it has yet to arrive. Incase it doesn't get here by this weekend I had a question. As you said, "when the points open bada bing! Do you mean that as the points open that is when it fires or does the mag fire on the closing of the points?
Also do you know if there is a way to tell how many degrees of timing is built into the mag? The only info I can find in my dads paperwork is 18 deg. written on an old Cam Spec. sheet. I'm assuming that was pertaining to that cam. My dad thinks it was set to 12 deg. but is second guessing now... Our mag is a Ronco.
I'm just trying to cancel out anything and make sure everything is set properly when we get it back together.
Thanks again.

Yep, when the points just barely open, if you have good eyesight you don't even need a timing light, I used to be able to do that but now for some reason.....:D
Don't know about Ronco but Hunt and Zig both stamp the amount of lead in the mag on the name tag, might check that???. But if there's no stamp, just time it at zero so it starts then set your total then check the initial, subtract it from the total and that will tell you what's in the mag!...

I'm not as smart as Art ;)so I use a buzz box for initial settings with mags. On race stuff I used locked out mags (vertex and Mallory). To set the advance, or find out what it has internal, use a timing light and degreed wheel or dampener. If you don't have one buy a stick on timing tape or calculate the distance from the TDC mark you need for your desired timing and mark the dampener there.

Points open...always remember and tell your friends.
The most common misconception is that a distributor or mag fires when the points close. Nope...Fire occurs when the points open.
