Gotta check out the Patterson marathon boat with Allison power on E-Bay. Item number is 290231208352. Halin Orrin did the deck on the restoration. Price is way out of my league.

Now that and Rudy Ramos' old boat side by side would be something to see and hear! :D

This and Rudy's "Cream Puff" were built to compete in the Salton Sea 500, which had a huge purse... I was under the impression that this boat had crashed on the rocks last year at marine stadium because the turn was too sharp.... Art?

Thanks Art, for posting a picture of the boat on this thread. I've written to ask permission to use all the pics from that e-bay listing for this thread and if I have enough picture posting participation on interesting threads (such as this one) I'll "sticky" them so they become de-facto articles.

You're welcome Don, but all you need to do is save the pics and post them, there's no copyrights on E-Bay ads it's just pics posted by sellers!.. Would be cool to have a pic thread, I'm sure there would be a large participation if it was a "sticky"!..

i'd be happy to read more on these boats, i was wondering why its top speed was 102mph, i thought for sure it would higher, it must be a really heavy boat and motor. sure would love to hear it go.:)

Yeah, but you have to remember back when they ran 102 that was unheard of speeds in a tank like that!..

What would be your guess on the weight of a 23 foot wood boat with a huge engine like that 12 cylinder. Fully rigged and fueled 5-6k? Wouldn't surprise me a bit and to push it 102 is something special.
RiverRacer
05-21-2008, 03:19 AM
Unless they skimped on it which I doubt, it's has to be over 2000lbs...
hm66Howard
05-21-2008, 03:42 PM
Well, the dry weight of an Allison is a little less than 1500 lbs and I bet that 23' wood decker has to weigh more than 500 lbs so it's gotta be pretty heavy. 102 mph sounds pretty good for a beast like that. Remember too, 3000rpm was screaming for that big ol' V-12! I don't remember what the gear ratio was in "CreamPuffs" box but, it was something like a 1 to 3 overdrive! Air racers today are pushing their RR Merlins to 4000 but, that's a grenade.
TonkaDriver
05-21-2008, 04:35 PM
It is not a wood decker it is all wood and 23 ft. I wouldn't be surprized if the v-drive for an engine that big was over 200 lbs alone. I believe the unlimiteds of that time weighed in at 6300 lbs and they were only 7 feet longer than this boat.

Heck my Daytona was at least 600lbs, that thing is all wood and it has to be around a 1000lbs!..

ART that "engine I D" thing on PBM is pretty cool! You did well! I got an 18 (because I'm old) and I have seen or worked on all of those motors in cars and boats. The "348 VS 409 dip stick deal" was the hardest part for me. I don't remember where the dipstick is on a BB Chevy (or my own dipstick) , let alone one from the 1960's! The flat head Ford had real late model (1954?) stock heads, and that may have thrown some guys. Didn't see any "Ardun's or Offys" in that mix. Funny how our brains work, great on old motor questions and badly on 'wifey questions'.

Well, it threw me for a bit too had to think about it for a bit, the flathead was easy since I had one just like it at one time!..
I got all 18 correct too....guess being an 'olfart has advantages. The 348 dipstick was just a guess as I didn't know there was a diff. between that and the 409, but how would a Ford guy know the little details like that? Better to be lucky than good.

Actually it wasn't the dipstick that made me think twice it was the induction, the 348 option came with 3 two's and the 409 came with 2 fours!..

...while you are identifying engines; does this one look familiar to anyone? My dad had this boat built in 1954 and I have always wanted to know what engine he used.
Thanks,

I'd agree. With the valley pan, dizzi in the rear, overhead valves and put in a boat in the 50s. I'd guess either a 331 or a 365 caddy. Say 49 or 50 vintage.
I'm only guessing at the year as I doubt they would buy a new motor just for the boat. Probably from a wreck.

Don't feel too bad. I missed that same one and to really rub it in, it said oldsmobile on the valve cover. Boy I felt bad enough for both of us. To miss one because i didn't read :( . But 17 out of 18 isn't too bad. Does that qualify me as an old fart too?
