removal...5/10/08..hi you guys..today i started removing a strong 1/8" of mastic that had previously held carpet in the Mandella. The carpet from the front seat back had been removed when we got her..so there was lots of nasty looking yellow glue and carpet residual outside the stringers and up the sides.I hit the glue for a moment with a palm sander but moved up to a 4 1/2" grinder. The interior had been shot white and was really thin and flakey where the glue was not..and it all is coming off well mantaining a soft touch. We are going to be able to give it a nice clear coat like there are so many fine examples of here often. It is going to be cool! I remembered a great deal of information and pictures from the lost site...floors getting prepped..I am not alone I am sure in wishing all the valuable information could be recovered and HERE right now!...Oh yeah baby..Yoli just returned from the store with the sandpaper!...I am being carefull carefull carefull...no strippers, oven cleaner...potatoe chips..come on sunshine..Happy Mothers' Day.I will take some pictures first light and show where I am at...Please can you guys show us again some pictures of floors in the preppping stage here? I could use them. Thankyou,Chris..see you tomorrow!

Chris, you are a lucky man if Yoli not only tolerates the hobby, but will go to the store to get supplies. You got a winner. As far as the floors go, are you planning on adding a flow coat or are you going to buff the resin that is there?

The glue that you are trying to remove is the old Henry construction adhesive It was the adhesive of choice for installing glue down carpet back when dinos roamed the earth. Not easy to remove from wood. It appears dry until you hit it with a sander and then the heat softens it up and it loads the paper up. I would use an open coat to start with and do it by hand with a block so you don't go too deep into the wood then graduate to a finer paper to take away the open coat scratches.

That stuff will work but don't use a razor scraper on the wood, it will dig into the wood just use a putty knife.

Can it be softened up with acetone and then scraped up with a putty knife?

probably but that stuff dries real fast, you will use lots of it and will probably eat the underlying finish also.

..well...one signifigant small step for mankind...I mean Chris..The starting point-the first section looks much better than it had..and we are certainly up for buying a shop vac now! For the moment the plan seems to be work all the field and edges on both sides. There isn't much pennitrating hardware in the back corners and I don't feel like taking it all off yet..so we will go back after the block is pulled and start to work the center fields and stringers.I am excited on clearing the center but have more carpet junk all the way forward and the gas tanks to be removed...there would be more space only to lay in itch if done now...it just dawned on me..it is gonna look GOOD under the tanks!...I will pull them immediately!

..all the way to the front bulkhead...I sanded once with 60 grit to get my marks knocked down sufficient for the photo shoot...I was harrassed by shadows so they are so so images!...nevertheless..of course I get to ask the question...because I have sandpaper up to like 550 wet..will the flow coat or gel coat look better with the surface having been made way smooth?...and or does the application fill all the high/low marks up so you wouldn't even see them? We will be coating this baby before long!...Happy "Luis Brummett" Memorial Day..this ones for you sir! chris over and out

You won't have to go any finer than 150 at the most.

It is looking great Chris! Keep up the good work. The clear will stick well to a rough surface so there is no need to sand too smooth. I would do just as Hydroguy said and stop at 150 to 220 or so. That thing is going to be great when it is finished. Thanks for sharing the pictures.
