Hi all,
I lurked on the old site, but thought it would be a good time to register. I would like to thank those that run the site for their hard work, I would be studying if it wasn't for this site, I am addicted :D.
Anyways, a little info on me and my boat WoodDreams (length warning):
A Naval Architecture and Business student at the University of Michigan entering my junior year. Always like wooden boats, something intriguing about them, yet harmful to my wallet. I always wanted a vdrive, but figured it would be after college that I could afford one. Passed on a GlenL Thunderbolt freshman year, because it would have been an 8hr round trip to Wisconsin, I think that boat got cut up :(
Well, I was looking through craigslist last year and saw a listing for a partially finished wood boat,of course I had to find out more. I talked with the owner/builder and found out that it was a GlenL Tornado that he constructed in the 70's but never finished due to family, work, etc. It sat in a barn until a couple years ago, when his wife wanted it gone. I was actually the 2nd person to respond to his ad,the first guy wanted to come out and look at the boat, I saw the pics and knew I wanted it. Worked out that the guy never showed, I grabbed my cousin, dads truck and a trailer and trucked an hour to grab my new project.
I was amazed at the condition of the boat, no rot, solid, just fading paint. I expected much worse. The owner is a great guy, we chatted about his plans for the boat, his past cars, took pics. I told him my intentions for the boat and he agreed, and I promised him visitation/driving privileges and with his baby when I finish it. I felt bad taking his baby, I could tell he really wanted to finish it, but he trusts me. I also recieved a 327 unassembled but complete motor he purchased in 73, I even have the original receipts, construction pics and build plans.
I have to finish up my GlenL TNT project, but hopefully I can start on this one next year. My plans are to re-fiberglass the hull, put in hardware, and run a cruising motor for a couple years to orient myself with the boat handling, do a lot of reading on this site, and then who knows:cool:
Oh yeah, cost of the boat, motor, and history lesson $0 :D
