Hi all,

I lurked on the old site, but thought it would be a good time to register. I would like to thank those that run the site for their hard work, I would be studying if it wasn't for this site, I am addicted :D.

Anyways, a little info on me and my boat WoodDreams (length warning):

A Naval Architecture and Business student at the University of Michigan entering my junior year. Always like wooden boats, something intriguing about them, yet harmful to my wallet. I always wanted a vdrive, but figured it would be after college that I could afford one. Passed on a GlenL Thunderbolt freshman year, because it would have been an 8hr round trip to Wisconsin, I think that boat got cut up :(

Well, I was looking through craigslist last year and saw a listing for a partially finished wood boat,of course I had to find out more. I talked with the owner/builder and found out that it was a GlenL Tornado that he constructed in the 70's but never finished due to family, work, etc. It sat in a barn until a couple years ago, when his wife wanted it gone. I was actually the 2nd person to respond to his ad,the first guy wanted to come out and look at the boat, I saw the pics and knew I wanted it. Worked out that the guy never showed, I grabbed my cousin, dads truck and a trailer and trucked an hour to grab my new project.

I was amazed at the condition of the boat, no rot, solid, just fading paint. I expected much worse. The owner is a great guy, we chatted about his plans for the boat, his past cars, took pics. I told him my intentions for the boat and he agreed, and I promised him visitation/driving privileges and with his baby when I finish it. I felt bad taking his baby, I could tell he really wanted to finish it, but he trusts me. I also recieved a 327 unassembled but complete motor he purchased in 73, I even have the original receipts, construction pics and build plans.

I have to finish up my GlenL TNT project, but hopefully I can start on this one next year. My plans are to re-fiberglass the hull, put in hardware, and run a cruising motor for a couple years to orient myself with the boat handling, do a lot of reading on this site, and then who knows:cool:

Oh yeah, cost of the boat, motor, and history lesson $0 :D

Man that is a hell of a deal. One good story to. Just take your time and don't skimp on anything and you will have a piece that you will be proud of and so will others.

Welcome to the boards.

Welcome to the boards and congrats on the new find. Hope that you can finish the boat and let the previous owner take a look at the finished project.

Welcome to the site and what a cool find you have there. You say your building another Glen-L boat at the moment have you been to their forum yet? They would love to hear your story about this boat.

Thanks for the welcome guys. NovaSS, I was a member on the Glen L site way back in 2000, but haven't redone my registration with the new site. I have not too active with my other project, but its nearing completion. I have been reading about yours also, good luck with it.

Welcome to v-drive land,

Wood and I don't get along at all so you have my utmost respect on your wood boat project. 327, cool... those little 3 and 1/4 stoke small blocks are a favorite of mine.:)

We are going to have two Glen L Tornado boats on static
display at the APBA Gold Cup on July 10, 11, 12.
Most of the Vintage boats will be on display next to
the Hot Pits in Piston Park. Let me know if you want to
get into the pits. I'll have a couple extra pit passes.

Its an acquired taste, I feel the same way about fiberglass at times. I like the capabilities of the motor as I always like rooting for the little guy. My cousin offered me a complete 400 motor for just the 327 block, but I can't part with it.

Wow, thanks for the offer, I would be more than grateful to join you in the pits, I apologize now for any drool I get on the hulls. My sister and I have been going to the gold cup for the past couple years and are trying to make it to a couple other races in MI. I have seen your boat on GlenL and really like the fact that your using it as it was meant. Are those all your boats in your garage gallery:eek:

I want to do a combination of paint and wood grain. I need to strip all the glass off first to determine if the nail/screw holes are visible and clean them up, may put on a new deck w/vacuum bagging if I'm not happy with the present condition.

[QUOTE=V-Drive Video;6527]Here's the Thunderbolt, I'll dig up the Tornado later.

Funny story about the thunderbolt, freshman year in college, I communicated on the Glen L site with a lady who built a thunderbolt in her mobile home. She couldn't continue on due to health reasons but was offering it for free. Trouble was getting it out the trailer, her plan was to cut the wall and pull the boat out, as it was a fully framed hull with some bottom planking I think. She was a 16hr round trip to Wisconsin and I figured it would be best to spend money on more responsible items:rolleyes:. Needless to say, I was the only one interested and she was going to cut it up If I didn't get it, don't know what became of that one.

I know I'm a youngn', but I have spent 7 years on my Glen L TNT project, although it has sat untouched for so long due to other projects and school. I aim to finish much of it this coming weekend, I am tired of seeing it incomplete. I heard patience leaves after the first week in boat building, the rest is determination.

Don't worry it'll all be worth it when it's done!..
