I need a torque value for a 7/16-14 exhaust manifold bolt into an aluminum head. I'm thinking 35 ft lbs but I want to make sure, I get spooked tightning stuff into aluminum,

My Dyna Systems book calls for 42 ft.lbs for grade 5 and 52 ft.lbs for grade 8. I've got another chart that says: 38-47 ft.lbs for grade 5 and 55-68 ft.lbs for grade 8. It's not the material your going into, it's getting the bolt to stretch enough to hold tight without breaking. Hope this helps. :)

Whoops, wrong size. I need info for 3/8-16 into aluminum. It's grade 5. Sorry about that. :o

I thought it sounded big but, you never know. OK, Dyna says: 26 ft.lbs grade 5 and 33 ft.lbs grade 8. The other chart specifies: 24-29 ft.lbs grade 5 and 34-41.5 ft.lbs grade 8. Again, you don't drop the torque just `cause you're going into aluminum. :D

UUmmmmmmm are you sure about that? I was under the assumption that the torque value for al. was about 30% less

As long as you have a least 2.5 times the diameter of the bolt for thread depth, you should be fine. Go with the lower end of the scale if it feels better to you. Also, the above figures are for dry, plated capscrews. Unplated bolts or using a lubricant on the threads changes the torque value. Any opinions guys?

I would use studs in aluminum heads myself, otherwise put inserts in if you're going to use bolts, but going into aluminum use lube(Moly) and snug them up only!... Those heads aren't cheap, spend $5.00 and put studs in them!..

Damn straight, aluminum hates hardware going in and out no matter how careful you are, steel vs. alloy is a no win eventually

So I said to the salesman at ARP "I know your products are nice but tell me how these double ended exhaust bolts are worth 69 bucks?" A quick trip to the local automart store neted me the same product (grade 8, black oxide) and a tube of anti seize albiet they are about a nut length too long for 20 bucks. ;)

You can call Canfield Heads @ 330-533-7092 or 533-0750 in the
late afternoon Ohio time. Its 6:35 now.
Ask for John Fenton, the owner. He is working with the afternoon shift
now. I have his heads on my small block. He is only 8 miles away from
me. He is usually very helpful.

I have called Canfield REPEATEDLY and have got nothing but "theres nobody here to take your tech call, I don't know when they will be able to" To which I said "what is the tech line for?" and real huffy she said "they can't sit around waiting for your call" to which I said "If this is their idea of a tech line and customer service I will never use your product again" Then I Faxed them my complete displeasure (in nice terms mind you) at their service on my company letterhead. All I needed was 5 minutes of their time for a simple question.

I don't mind spsending the bucks on the head studs, main studs etc but I draw the line at expensive exhaust studs. :(

Dude, go to Home Dump and buy a piece of threaded rod for $1.50, spend a half hour and make a set of studs, we're not talking head or main studs here, LOL..:D

Went to the auto parts store and got the correct ones Art. Chased the threads down and anti-siezed them to death and the problem is solved
