Here is a little weekend project that may or may not be of any use to someone. There was a name from the previous owner on the rear of my Sanger Hydro that I want to remove but wasn't sure how to proceed. Finally I got some automotive grade Laquer thinner and took a q tip to the name. After considerable work I found I could remove the name without any damage to the Gel coat (it did dull it down some) It took me a couple of hours but I finally removed it all. That left me with the problem of removing the image that was left. I sanded it down with 600 w/d paper, then went to 1500 and finally 3000 then I buffed it out with rubbing compund with a buffer and pad and waxed the crap out of it with Turtle wax. If I highlight it in the sun I can see a faint ghost of a couple of letters but I'll be darned if I am going to sand anymore on it. Other than that you'd never know anything was there. BTW the paint store lady told me if you have any paint lettering over eurthane paint or clear, spray oven cleaner on until the lettering bubbles and then hose it off with no damage to paint. She said she used that method to remove a company name from a truck she bought. :D

Keep in mind that is a Lady telling you that, not that she doesn't know her $hit but I am sure her love for that truck is not the same as yours or mine for our boat. I would NEVER spray oven cleaner on my gel coat even if she garenteed it would do no damage.

She's blowing smoke big time, it removes paint that means it'll remove the clear also, and it will do a number on gel, and watch out if it's done in the hot sun!..

Not spraying it on gel coat... Polyeurthane paint or poly clear. I can pretty much guarantee that I am not going to use it either , it took me a week of thinking just to use the lacquer thinner, but she has been in charge of this automotive paint supply store for a long time seems like she knows her stuff.......I would darn sure use it on something I didn't care about first.

I wet sanded the lettering "Cobra 427" off my deck with 600 grit. Actually was a good first step towards bringing back the shine to the old faded gelcoat. :)

Had the WA registration numbers removed and some lettering on my engine scoop this summer by a pinstriper that`s well known around here and came from So-Cal,he used Easy Off and said thats common based on the type of paint that most stripers use if its done by a pro i was pretty freaked out when he told me what he was doing, ended up doing a little wet sanding and buffing he felt my boat was striped when the paint was real green

I have used Easy off on race cars with lettering. It works. However...you shoulds always test it first..... Not sure about gel coat.
And yes, it freaked me out every time.

You got a lot more balls than I do, I happen to get a little over spray on gel once when I was removing anno, and you could see the spots after cleaning it up, I would never use that!..

When I was a kid I had an old service truck, hand lettered. I used rubbing compound to take the paint off. I was young and had more energy than now...But I don't see where it wouldn't work on a boat.

Typically the letters are done with lettering paint more commonly known as One Shot and yes Easy Off oven cleaner takes it right off.

Yep thats exactly the name he asked me if it was i didn't`t know so we did a small inconspicuous area first worked beautiful, btw he never sprayed it but would put it on a rag and just apply to the letters
