With all the stuff about no zinc in the oil anymore i'm thinking about changing to a synthetic like royal Purple or Amsoil but I have a roller cam and lifters and have heard scuttlebut that it is too slick for those cams. Any imput out there on this? Wags....Art

This subject has been thrashed over and over and you'll get a million different opinions on what oil is the best, but any oil can with the "API" circle on it is crap, even the Schell Rotella has dropped some of the Zinc content from what I've heard!.. Anymore a racing oil is the way to go, and my worthless personal opinion is the old Kendall green stuff was the best ever, and it is back and available from Brad-Penn and I'll be going back to it!...

From what I have heard the old green stuff is great, but we have been happy with Valvoline racing oil in our cars. There are a bunch of good oils out there these days, just be prepared to spend a little money as the 99 cent oil may not cut it in extreme conditions.

I always had no problems with 20-50 Valvoline racing oil. Even the switch to alcohol. This was in a 550 cid injected chevy that turned around 7500. This is only my experince and I have no facts to back it up other than no troubles.

I lost a set of bearings with that oil once, that's my only experience with it!..

I was always a Valvoline guy but swithced to Royal Purple in the Pro Mod boat a few years ago and was impressed. Not only does the alcohol and water not mix with it the oil which allows you to reuse it but the bearings looked much better also. So I switched to it in all my alcohol stuff and have even started putting it in the lawn mower. I am confident that the Red Line oils are just as good.

Well, never tried Royal Purple but I hear nothing but good about it, but now that it's back I'm going back to the good ole "green" stuff!. I do use Royal Purple gear oil in my overdrive though and it works great, not too soft and not too hard of shifts!...

i never used valvoline. but, had a good friend that had a dozen plus of track championships to his name in late models. after he "made it", where the racing was paying 100 percent of its own bills, he had 3 all alum motors. changed out every 6-8 weeks. one was always at the engine builts being rebuilt and dino'd, one in the car and one ready to go in. he started out with pennzoil racing and used it for years. each engine for rebuild got rings and bearing and basic checking over. short story long, they changed over to Valvoline racing oil. next 2 motors that went back had to have EVERY moving part replaced. builter was going nuts trying to find out way. no one knew for sure. well i was with him when we went to the local speed shop. the owner ask how he liked that NEW oil?. he looked at his brother, then me and it clicked. that was the ONLY thing that they had changed in 8+ years. went back to pennzoil and were back to rings and bearing being cahinged, and that was was "just because". i know boats, drag cars and dirt track racing is all diff in it own way, but..........

That reminds me of a test we did back in the day of different brands or racing oil, we took a piece of glass and poured an amount of 50wt racing oil from Valvoline, Kendall, Quaker State and Penzoil, stood the glass up and watched the race to the bottom, can you guess the winner!...:)

It lacks the main ingredient "zinc dithiophosphate (ZDDP)" almost next to none!.. EPA bullshit!...

Well? Which one?
Big Pete swears by Pennzoil straight 50, says it shows the least wear on tear down out every oil they've tried.

I called Kendall 2day and spoke w/a tech, they said the new GT-1 Hi-Po SAE 20-50 has been formulated w/ added ZDDP, and it comes from the proven fields in Penn. ST.
I also read from the PPI < Professional Petrolem Institute web. that too much Zink can/will contrubute to plug fouling......soooooo, it's Less-la-fair!< I'm a Red Neck... dont know that French stuff, cept Mayo & Fries..an I dont eat Escargo

Another opinion.
I am a Valvoline 20w 50 VR1 guy. Hundreds of passes in a drag piece. No issues. Now I am a fool that pre heats the oil. I don't run to much fuel, so oil is not diluted with methanol. I change the oil after 2 race weekends. I also use a pro blend addative every other oil change.
Synthetis. Used to run it in the drag piece before I switched to alcohol. Awesome stuff. Pricey to change 5 times a year. If I was having bearing issues, I'd go for it. If you have a 5 to 7 dollar a quart budget, spend away.
It all boils down to what you have experience with and what you are comfortable with. That damn maintenance thing falls in there somewhere also.
BTW, I'm just a drag guy. Not an endurance guy.

I rank fouled plugs from too much zinc in my oil (I don't think that is ever going to happen) way below my priority for well oiled cam and bearings

Valvoline won by a mile then Pennzoil, Kendall and Quaker State it was the thickest, although the Quaker State was thicker the Kendall was way slicker, and it's a pain when you're working on a motor, you can't hardly hang on to the parts, lol...:D

My 2cents. We used to use Pennzoil with 105 avgas in the gas tank with no dramas. That was quite a while ago. However these days it seems most of the front runners in the drag car fields (downunder in Oz) are using Red Line oil (unless sponsored by an oil co.). Red Line oil is definately the performance oil. Doesn't Casale use Red Line product in their vdrives?
