Hi Guys,
Whats the California laws on Hood Scoops? I noticed some guys run there scoops backwards. (?) Whats the deal on that?
Also, Any good leads/websites on cool hood scoops? I dont want a car scoop. (The motor is blown w/ 2-850's)
Thanks,
Mark

It has to do with migratory water fowl in your area...if it's a goose area then you can run it forward, but if ducks and smaller it must be run facing the rear.
Sorry, that's a joke...:D
Some guys like the ram air aspect of running it forward, some run it backwards in case water comes over the bow.

If it faces the passenger compartment it must have CG approved spark arrestors.

Damn!
I knew I'd forget to call you.
If your son says some stranger called for you it was me.:D
A friend of mine is making the spacer for me, provided I can find a piece of stainless bar stock with the right OD.

In a circle boat(race)the scoop is mounted backwards to prevent a washdown in the turn, but on a lake boat, to get away from the flame arrestor you can run the scoop backwards as long as it is a "metal" scoop only, can't have anything that will catch fire or melt!..

Thank you for the info. I'll try to stay away from the birds...:D

If you face it forward you will need flame arrestors regardless of type scoop, or you'll get a ticket!.. Put a set of injectors on and you don't have to worry about that stuff!...:D

I run my 'glass scoop forward w/ no arrestors in it :D :D :D This is not the legal way but I haven't been hasseled. I made the mounts for the scoop so I know I can turn it around if I have to.
By the way, if you sit close to your motor, like I do, dont look at it when it won't start lol when it does you might loose an eyebrow

Thanks,
MarkThere's a guy on EvilPay that sells some pretty cool fiberglass ones. They look like the scoops that The Surfers and the Greer, Black, and Prudomme fuelers ran back in the sixties if your into that thing. I am. :) I learned about the eyebrows running my scoop forward. Turned it around. Then I took some water over the bow. I was glad I did it. I like the look too. :D

Saw the yellow, red, and orange ball once myself...I was driving a BGF for a friend and had one of those hair removal experiences. Apparently the mag hold down was not tight enough because it backed out on the way to the holding rope. As I was staring into the injector scoop on top of a big ol Mooneyham 1471 I gave er a big squirt and hit the starter. Apparently it didn't like the 30 or so degrees of retard and belched out a huge swirling ball of rather warm colors. When I opened my eyes I saw all this floating stuff, it was my eyebrows and lashes.

That is some funny stuff right there my old boat with 660`s would do that on a cold start on a cool day learned to lean left before hitting the key always the most fun with someone new in the boat especially if it was stubborn and needed a shot of halon non boating peeps got a hell of a first ride would totally freak em out,is this safe?

Not really, my comp flats were actually harder to get out of the gate. Lighter boats and low gears made them pretty violent. Down track was a different story, blown boats will pull hard for the whole quarter mile. Blown gas hydros are a little dicey on the shift. Makes me all the more in awe of the fuel hydro shoes.

Yep a carbon copy, only mine was a pair of 660's on a tunnelram and both belched at the same time while looking into the scoop!..

You know something, I actually tried to set mine up w/ flam arrestors as a "just in case Jonny Law wants to hassle" w/ the scoop from Legends, you have to fab up your own mounts and cut your own holes. I test fit my dads arrestor and it fit. I have never ran the boat w/ it though, that would be no fun!

Yeah I can see flame arrestors(ask my eyebrows and eyes)but air filters, LOL.... But if you run injectors you don't have that problem!..:D

So in a race boat does that mean the motor is getting its best air just before it goes under??? LOL

Funny...
Belching the "flame" always is fun when you have some inocent bystander nearby...
I never forget at the drags one night with my B/A Gas car while a "by-stander" was walking by... stopped to look down the throat to see what I had under the hood...
Didn't have to shave I bet for a week... :)

Yep I can relate to that, blistered eye balls, eye lashes gone, pain for a week!. That sure was a pretty flame coming at me in slow motion though, at least it seemed like it was in slow motion!..
