on the trailer is stamped 1963..the seller said it was a 1967...the sticker on the plate reads 1966..this boats recent history as I was given to understand is as follows..seller owned her for three years here in clearlake...his friend had it for another ten years here....and...the exciting fact..said that there were only 13 like her and that he helped build it many years ago!...almost six weeks ago it became available...that first week in crude field I was sick because..ah...I was on fiscal restrictriction with financial opperating limitations...and that PINK..she had cast a spell on me!...I was ill...came home for the weekend and 15 minutes before the bank was to close Yoli says she had been trying to talk to me...and I listened and it was all about "Oh thankyou Yoli..thankyou...hurry ..you go girl...seven minutes the bank closes!...there is probably someone there right now....he said it goes to the first person with cash in hand!...oh thankyou Yoli...hurry...I"ll call the seller and tell him we'll be there in ten." We give him a roll and a hug...I knew it was going to be difficult parting ways for him...and senced his melancholy..good news is sharing images of her here and for me I eagerly await any information regarding Mr.Brummet and the Mandella history...Roaddog440..we are praying for your wife and you also..really really really hard..My mother and I just got home from Stanford two days ago...she has some difficulties to live with..man we are happy she is alive...from clearlake, california april 19,2008 chris and yoli over and out

Chris... thanks for the thoughts for my wife. She is doing better but we still don't know exactly what has been the problem. We have one more specialist to see on the 12 th of May. Congrats on the new Mandella. They are built like a tank and you should have a great time in it.

[QUOTE=chrisandyoli;2462]....and...the exciting fact..said that there were only 13 like her and that he helped build it many years ago!...

Someone else can surely give you a better lesson on Lou Brummet's accomplishments, he was a true Legand of v-drives. Don't know what would makes that boat any different from the rest. Lou built the boats a bit different over the years long deck, short deck, wood or glass but there are a ton of Mandella's out there I'm sure you can add a couple more 00's to your number. I had one we did a little marathon racing with. Seen one drop off a crane one time and the fins just stuck in the blacktop. No damage at all to the hull. Tim

Lou brummett was the builder of the glass "Mandellas". His plug
for the mold was built by Harlan Orrin that built the wooden Mandella
boats. Lou raced hiis own boats towing ski racers over 100 mph.
He also ran another as an SK runabout and won from coast to coast,
and a whole series of Marathon race boats. Some of his racing customers
included Red Adair, Astronaut Gordon Cooper, and Bob Nordskog. Elvis used
Lou's personal boat"Rawhide' in the movie "CLAMBAKE"
Lou Brummet was killed in a racing accident in the mid 70s.
We have a long deck Mandella with a SBC that we run in APBA Vintage.
It is SK-333 and named Miss Mandella.

Gordon Cooper drove a Mandella in the Salton City 500 miler , in 1963 or maybe 64 ? Bruce Izzat drove " Kini Popo Lua" an 18 footer, pulled Butch Peterson in the PCSPWSA waterski races. I think the ONLY way Bruce drove was with the plates UP all the way. At the time, Butch held the world record 1/4 mile speed record at 106 + mph. You might check with Harlin on history of your boat, he's STILL building/restoring boats, has a shop in Fallbrook CA

Chris, great find, I have had quite a few of them over the years, one of my old boats is on Clear Lake somewhere. The guy that bought it lives on the lake in the Konacti (sp) Bay area. It is white with some kind of blue graphics he had put on it. The motor is a 440 Chrysler with Max Wedge heads and cross ram intake, it also has 4 fiberglass bucket seats in it. My last one I sold to Brassnutz here on the site and he is finishing it up. There are boats that are quiker or faster then a Mandella but very few of them that you can run around in 1 to 2 foot chop at 65 to 70 mph all day long and keep your kidneys working. When I was in high school I took ours from San Diego to Long Beach by way of the Pacific Ocean on a smooth day and then ran it over to Avalon and back on a bet. A pretty dumb thing to do alone but they used to do the Catalina Ski race behind them in the past. Good luck and I will have to see your museum to V-drives you have started one of these days when I am in Napa visiting my mom.

and i are so impressed with all this information...Louis Brummett is for sure a hero for us...thankyou for writing about his legacy...priceless!...today i started cleaning the deteriorating foam out of the bow beneath the deck through an existing access hole..i don't believe it is original material....mainly because threre were several dixie cups incased here and there...and i want to believe they weren't Mr.Brummett's men's mixing cups..and also the thought entered my mind the little boat saying "My life started in a Dixie cup" the color of the fiberglass in the bow is fine golden amber colored..i know RiverRacer would tear that deterioration out so i got busy!....we started sanding the carpet glue from the interior sides and floor.there is a light coat of black paint around the rails and clean around the motor...there is blue and yellow metal flake beneath the white.that is as far as i have got and finally made it here to especialy find the right words to say thankyou boatguy222 hm66howard Poncho RiverRacer Roaddogg4040 Canam10 BradP Eboatracer skyskier Shooter2 shopteacher Gr8white...here are a few shots of a direct drive down the road i stumbled upon just outside of town last night...60's Chris Craft Cavalier...Corvette motor runs exellent ..she is in great shape...

Hey Guys sorry to jump in on your conversation, but I was just reading along and enjoying. I have a 62' Mandella 18' still owned by the original owner (My Father) it was originally bought with silver dollars from Brummett in Pasadena,CA. Has a 64' Pontiac GTO 398 (never torn down- original) with MT Criss Cross down draft manifold, Dual Carter 400's, Casale V-drive w/ I/O, Zeiman trailer. Its spent most of its life in a garage, and always in fresh water..Anyhow I was just wondering if you know of anyone out there that is in the market? I can get photos on request, its a great part of history and would like to see it go to a good owner. It was last in the water in 2003.

Hey Firemonkey911,

There is no doubt you will find people on this board interested in dad's Mandella.

A few suggestions for getting your information onto the board:

1) Take some good digital pictures to upload to this site

2) Join this board as a "member" so you can post an ad and your pictures to the Classified section. Membership is cheaper than a weekend ad in a local paper and you will reach v-drivers all over the world.

3) Be sure to include what State and County the boat is located in. Today, gas to go pick-up a boat several states away can cost as much as the boat.

4) If you look around on the site you will find information on how to post your pictures. If you need help with your photos just ask.

5) Your message at the end of this thread is going to be buried soon. Take advantage of the "Introduce Yourself" section to have your message seen by more readers.

Last, there are more than a few Mandella fans on here (Harlan Orrin and Donald Duck 31E are a couple) and they just may need to round out their collections with dad's boat!

Couldn't help but notice the name of your boat. I have the same name on mine. It was originally purchased by my cousin off of Butch Petersen back in the day...I'm a third generation owner of it. Where did you pick up your boat at?

Is your boat " Kini Popo Lua " ? I skied many times behind that boat with Bruce Izatt JR when we were kids. It was one of the top ski racing rigs in the mid 60's.

No. As far as I know, it's always been called Miss Mandella. It was raced in the Orange Bowl a couple of times back in the 60's and I know my cousins did Catalina with it. I'll have to check with my uncle on the name though. He's got more information on the history.

Don't mean to hijack here Chris but, hey skyskier, do you remember a metal flake green and white Howard with Ford symbles painted on the rear of the "swoosh"? The boat had been set up for ski racing at one time. It used to read "Cobra 427" on the deck. Check the pics in my gallery. Just curious. Like everyone else, I want to find out my boats history. Thanks
