We were pullin' some stuff apart at work the other day with a impact gun and I took a small piece of metal to my left eye. Didn't think much of it figuring it would work itself out like they usually do. Well it didn't. After four days and then last night in severe pain and no sleep I went to the doc today. They got the piece out but, because it had been in there a while it had started rusting. You know what they do for that? They take what essentially is a very small die grinder and carbide burr and GRIND the rust out of your eyeball!!! Well, let me tell you, once the numbing drops wore off, it became what I like to call "insanity pain". No where to run!!! Then came the Vicodin. God bless whoever invented that! So, remember to wear your safety glasses `cause when you least expect it, it'll get you!!!

I never had the die grinder deal done before and it sound horrific. I have had metal in the same eye twice. One time without using eye wear and one with. I thought it was bad when they took a needle to my eye but what you have gone through makes my eye hurt just reading about it. Hope you heel soon.

Well as a tool and die maker I should know better, but I have got stuff in my eyes alot. The last time I went to the drs for it he asked me which peice is hurting. Now on the better side of the drs I PASSED MY MEDICAL this week so I am clear now to race. That was my final hurdle. And as for glasses if you hate wearing them go out and buy a good pair it makes a difference. When I was on the road alot and not so hands on mine were Oakley. Now that I am back building I wouldnt dare wear them. But dont buy the cheapest pair they may protect your eyes, but they suck for the optics, and then you wont want to wear them.

You guys are making me shudder. I was 17, college freshman, full ride baseball scholarship, working for my dad over Christmas vacation and wearing a full leather apron and full face shield. Short story is; the metal came out, the small crater ulcerated, a fungus started growing on my cornia all of which they said was caused by a coating on the metal. 13 weeks later I got out of the hospital, kept my eye, lost my scholarship, and I can not look at a kid with an eye patch without tearing up and if any of my shop guys got caught without their safety glasses they got the #10 regular to the backside. Basic Pavlov but it worked. It doesn't even have to be your work habits, it can be the guy next to or accross form you. Someone has alreadysaid it--"just wear the glasses, goggles or whatever."

When it comes to your eyes, you can never take enough precaution!...Lesson learned. I'll be wearing the safety glasses now in situations I normally wouldn't have. Don't want to go through that again!
P.S. Thanks for all the kind words. Went in for a follow-up today. The ulsering is healing and there's only a slight rust ring. Doc didn't want to grind anymore. Really broke my heart hearing that! Tested the eyeballs and the vision in the injured eye is better than the other!!!

You have been blessed with the sacred eyeball do-over--very hard to come by. Glad to hear you are on the mend.
