While removing the checking clearcoat Off of the old fading Gel,
Acouple of spots were pretty bad and needed to go alot further into the gell than others .
Soooo I am Going over the entire thing and gonna prep it for paint.
I know you are supposed to re-gel,But We painted our Sanger,(but that was a decade ago with Deft Gloss polyurethane that you can't get any more, I don't think you could buy it civilian back then, But I got some.)
So Acrylic Urethane or Acrylic Enamel or is there better to Use.
I really want to use A single stage Easier to rent the booth time I Need.
I have painted before (Used to paint F-18c's in the Marine Corps.
Epoxy Primer or urethane primer.
There is gonna be alot of prep becase i don't like waving to people as i go buy

SoCal Wrench,
Take a look at the linear polyurethane (LP) paints Interlux offers for boats at:
http://www.yachtpaint.com/usa/
Their LP paint finishes are hard, shiny and have good scuff resistance.
They also offer compatible fillers and primers.

My project Stevens is going to be prepped with a polyester primer (catalyst is MeKP, just like glass), which acts as a sealer and a surfacer, and then shot with acrylic urethane basecoat and then cleared with ployurethane clear. 2 stage paint (or 3 or.....), just like new automobiles have. Not as stong as gel,, but sky's the limit on colors, flake, metallic's and even pearls.....

:DBB recommended DuPont Fulthane when I painted the POS. I told him I wanted something that would take a severe beating.

Have you checked into gel coating? cost would likely be cheaper, and less stages in prep. I just gel 'ed my floor, Charcoal on the center and side, covered by clear. This took a half gallon of gel, and 3/4 gallon of Prestec, cost for the two gallons was less than $180. I'm debating the exterior finish now, I was planning on paint, but the ease of the gel coat, has made me rethink this. Paint product on my last boat exceeded $2500, this time it's a sponsor deal. So paint or gel, tough decisions

Well I guess it depends what you want. I have never seen gel have the shine or reflective qualities of a good automotive paint. However gel coat as mentioned is a far tougher product in resisting scratches from normal use. IMO if it was a family ski boat I'd try and use gel but if it was a hotrod or a race/show piece I'm paint it. I'm partial to paiting since a used to do paint and body work on cars.
BTW, mines PPG acrylic urethane and is holding up very well so far.

I've been in the automotive and custom bike painting business for 30+ years now, but never painted a boat. Mine will be the first. I'm planning on using my normal acrylic urethane base-clear but may try a scratch resistant clear my paint supplier was telling me about. I use Nexa Autocolor ( used to be ICI Autocolor) and I guess they have a super tough clear that is used on city busses, trucks etc that take a beating and aslo gets graffiti'd alot,....so graffiti can be washed off with potent solvents without hurting the finish. My paint rep said it would be awesome for my floor but it dries so hard so fast that it is next to impossible to sand and buff. I have a nice paint booth but still get an occasional dust nib, so I'll probably just use the normal acrylic urethane clear on the exterior. I'll let you all know how the scratch resistant stuff works. ( got him to let me demo it on my boat,.....cuz it is big $$$$!!! lol)

jaminj946,
Hey keep us posted on the "scratch resistant clear". What is it or who makes it? I'd be curious to do a little research on it.
Thanks,
Loren

I will let you know. I'm a little ways from paint yet but hopefully in a month or so. I've sprayed ICI for around 12-15 years now I suppose, and love it. The paint line was purchased from ICI ( they make all kinds of chemical stuff in europe, even dynamite!) by PPG, and is now called Nexa Autocolor. They pretty much left it as it's own line and is still manufactured in Europe. This scratch resistant stuff is suppose to harder than the hubs of hell !!!! They tell me you cant sand and buff it!!!

I had really good luck Sikkens on my race boat. Did it in a base clear. It was pretty durable and easily fixed. Paint job was nothing fancy though, 3 colors you can see it in my pics. The next job with ppg I think looked nicer, the colors were a little more vibrant, but it doesnt seem as durable. Both times I have painted my boat they have been done by top notch painters as a sponsorship type of deal.e work, I do most of the work under there guidance. These were roughly the steps,1) repair and sand 2) epoxy prime to seal, then prime and sand. I just used regular hi build ( as I call it) primer. It then went from my shop to the body shop and they sprayed it in base clear. I am not a painter, so these are the way I remembered it. Just my less than 2 cents.
Brian
PS If you want to see the car that they built and painted for my Dad check out the low rider in my pics. Not to worry I will delete the pic after awhile as it is only a land yacht. Album is called Land yacht.
