View Full Version : Tach Drive On my Caselle,Problem?
I have a Tach Drive on the top front of my Caselle my Tach is a Mechanical and is not working. I checked the cable and it is good, the tach itself is good, but what i found was when i removed the tach drive from the caselle it appears the square rod coming out of the tach drive has the end of it rounded where it slips into driveshaft. How can i fix this? do i just replace the square shaft coming out of the tach drive? Where do you get this piece? The tach drive spins freely when being turned by hand its just not locking up when slipped into the end of the driveshaft.
Thanking you in advance.

I think this is what you need?

I appreciate the link but i already have the complete assembly but the square rod coming out of the assembly is rounded off and not square like the rest of the square rod the part that inserts into the end of the driveshaft, so the drive shaft just spins and doesn't turn the tach cable.......Can these assemblies be rebuilt or the square rod be replaced?
Thanks

I bet you can replace the square rod. I bet casale, JJ @ Beverfab or Tom at Menkens V-drive could get you just the square drive. I have to imagine that it could not cost too much either.

If it is just a square peice of stock then just go to your Local hardware or automotive parts store and tell them you need some Square Key Stock the same size as what you have ( take sample ) it comes in 12" lenghts usually. Buy a peice go home cut a peice the same lenght as the old one and install it.
If that does not work then take the old one down to a Diesel Truck repair center and see if they have any thing in there speedometer cable repair items that resembles it. If they do buy it and repair yours.

I believe this is what you are asking about. The bottom of the page (77) on this link. http://www.glenwoodmarine.com/Catalog/GAUGES.pdf
Flatmvn i was thinking the same thing on the bar stock, but i have never torn a tach drive apart, i guess there is a 1st time for everything. 67 wickens the page you directed me to is exactly what i was talking about i guess i could talk to them and find out what all is needed to rebuild a tach drive or if it just the bar stock only. At least it is a starting point.
Thanks alot guys, i appreciate it.........

Only problem with going to the hardware store is that the key is .150". I can only assume that Casale made this so the majority of the people have to purchase them. I on the other hand being a cheap sob, took a .187" ejector pin and put it in a Harig Fixture and ground .018" off each side to make it work. I have done this for a few years. It takes way longer, not cheaper if you are considering your time as money, but when doing it for myself this is how I got around it. If you have a buddy that works in a tool shop or on a surface grinder he may be able to help you. But it must be square and measure .150" across the flats. The flats on each end dont have to line up with each other.

Hardware keystock is garbage you need the good stuff, but this is just everyday speedo/tach stuff, all you need to do is hit up a local speedo shop and they'll fix you up no problem for about a buck, or you spend a bunch of time fabricating a drive!..

gee never thought about that. But it makes sense as the cables are generic so to speak. Thanks, but at least my way is a bigger pain and takes more time so that must make it better, doesnt it?????

I had one break in my ski boat because it rusted away, went to a speedo shop and they made one out of a piece of speedo cable, they had a die and it forms it into a square, worked great for the 7 years I ran it, wonder if they still do that!..
i called glen something marine as suggested in an earlier post and ordered the piece i was needing, they felt that should fix it providing i can get the tach drive apart and put back together again properly...........

No need to take the tach drive apart, just pop the cap off put the little drive in and put the cap back on!..
I see what your saying but the drive (the square piece of stock) has the end rounded that fits into the end of the driveshaft....so i think if i put the new clutch in the end of the driveshaft the square stock piece will just spin if i dont replace the piece that comes out of the tach drive? or am i seeing this all wrong?

Hmmm, every v-drive I've had or seen had a square in the top shaft and square going into the drive, the cable end going into the drive is round though!... I'm not getting the clutch thing though!.
I must not have explained it clearly, the square stock coming out of the tach drive assembly is all square except for the last 1/8" where it should be square but appears to have been rounded some how. As far as the clutch glen something marine says there is a fitting that is what the square shaft fits into in the end of the drive shaft and the end of my drive shaft just a hole with no small fitting for the bar stock to lock into which i believe they call that the clutch drive.

Ok, here's the tach drive(not a cluctch), it is square so is the shaft in the v-drive, a piece of square stock the right lenght connects the two togther, that is a press in piece that goes in the v-drive shaft, they should have that!.... BTW, it's Glenwood Marine!..

I will post a pic tonight when i get home, my Tach drive is totally different! My Tach Drive actually threads on to the male snout that is part of the actual caselle top cover---meaning my top cover and Tach Drive are to seperate pieces....
