Many flatbottoms use the Ol cable and pullys. Hydro's and some others use a mechanical type(Gear Driven). For some that have never seen anything other than the pully system here is a pic of a Casale Off-set mechanical steering currently being installed by Tom at AutoMarine in one of their customers Hot Boats! ;)

Ahh Mitch.....Welcome back my friend! Without you here we wouldn't know about Casale V-Drives :D-
That steering system is badass! Got some questions about it....
1) is it available in different ratios for use in heavier boats where a slower ratio is needed?
2) That unit looks stringer mounted with an arm..... Are there other versions, such as a hybrid back to a sprocket, chain and cables( instead of the arm) or a behind the dash version for cruisers?
Dare I ask what kind of $$$ is needed to obtain one?

No kidding, it looks to be substantially more than the usual 29.99. It is definately a nice looking system.

Answers:
1. No, the only ratio avail. is 6:1, but you can use a longer or shorter pitman arm that will help control the speed of the steering. Also avail. in either right or left hand.
2. Never been installed that way, but as long as the sproket is broached to fit the arm, anything is possible.
3. Off-set $1500.00 complete with upright brackets, pitman arm, hub for input column shaft.

Perfect for a 32' High Boy roadster! Or a Jeep wagon! Works great with a 1" tubing 'draglink' and a billet bellcrank on the stringer/motor-rail to the rudder's tiller arm!

The word "Draglink" just solved my hook up problem with a pitman arm. I was going to a cable set up but did not like the way the cable routed using a pitman arm. :D

If you are having Ron do your rudders, why not ask him about using this steering box with them? Solid steering is very nice "when it counts".

I have decided to get everything from Ron, I don't have to jump around looking for stuff then and the steering he uses is very similiar to this.
